Hennessey Special Vehicles has introduced the Blackbird, a new hypercar that takes a different approach from many of today’s high-performance models by prioritising driver engagement, analogue controls, and long-distance usability over digital complexity. The Texas-built model draws inspiration from the iconic Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird aircraft while combining lightweight construction with a naturally aspirated V8 engine and manual transmission.

Unlike the company’s Venom F5, which was developed with outright speed and power as its primary objective, the Blackbird has been engineered to focus on the driving experience. Hennessey says the new model is designed to offer a stronger connection between the driver and the machine through a combination of rear-wheel drive, a six-speed gated manual transmission, and a naturally aspirated engine, while maintaining the performance expected of a modern hypercar. 

Power comes from a newly developed 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 created in collaboration with Ilmor Engineering. The engine is expected to produce between 800 and 850 horsepower while revving beyond 9,000 rpm. Performance targets include a 0-60 mph sprint in approximately 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 220 mph. Supporting these figures is a bespoke full-carbon chassis, carbon-fibre bodywork, adaptive suspension, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, and a target dry weight of under 3,000 lbs (1,360 kg). 

The Blackbird’s styling reflects its aviation-inspired origins through a long, low profile and several distinctive design elements. Among them are active vertical rear stabilisers that deploy automatically at 71 mph and are angled to reference the SR-71 aircraft designation. Other exterior details include a diamond-shaped quad exhaust inspired by the Bell X-1 research aircraft, alongside Formula One and endurance racing-inspired aerodynamic features. 

Inside, the cabin follows an analogue-first philosophy by eliminating conventional infotainment screens and digital displays. Instead, the driver is greeted by a large central tachometer, physical switches, a traditional ignition key, and an exposed gated gear selector. Smartphone integration for navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto is handled discreetly through the driver’s own device rather than a built-in touchscreen. 

While performance remains a key part of the package, Hennessey has also placed considerable emphasis on comfort and practicality. The Blackbird is designed to comfortably cover more than 800 miles in a single day, featuring a larger cabin than the Venom F5, adaptive suspension, improved noise insulation targets, generous luggage capacity, four cup holders, and additional storage throughout the interior. 

Production of the Hennessey Blackbird will be limited to 71 examples worldwide. Each vehicle will be designed, engineered, and built in Texas, with pricing starting from US$2.5 million before taxes. Customer production is scheduled to begin between 2029 and 2030, and Hennessey says that more than two-thirds of the planned production has already been allocated ahead of the model’s public debut.
