Wing Hin Motorsports endured a weekend of highs and lows at the 20th Anniversary Bangsaen Grand Prix, securing one race victory and three additional podium finishes while overcoming a series of setbacks during Round 2 of the TSS The Super Series and Thailand Super Series in Thailand.

Competing on the demanding 3.74km Bangsaen street circuit, the Malaysian outfit arrived as defending GT4 Class champions and fielded four entries in the Super Touring Class. Despite the unforgiving nature of the street track, the team once again demonstrated its competitiveness, fighting at the front across multiple categories.

In the GT4 Class, the #39 Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 driven by Hong Kong racer Ryan Wong and Malaysian touring car ace Mitchell Cheah delivered a strong performance in Race 1. Starting sixth on the grid, Wong executed a measured opening stint, maintaining position before capitalising on an incident involving a rival car to move up the order.

After the driver change, Cheah launched an aggressive charge through the field, setting the fastest lap of the race with a blistering 1:39.030. Although he crossed the finish line first, a post-race 15-second penalty dropped the duo to second place, denying them victory but still earning valuable championship points.

Cheah reflected positively on the result, noting that the team’s primary objective was to maximise points on one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar.

Race 2 appeared set to deliver an even better outcome. Starting from the front row, Cheah immediately challenged for the lead and successfully emerged in front after an intense opening-corner battle. He steadily built a commanding advantage before handing over to Wong during the mandatory pit stop.

Wong rejoined comfortably ahead of the field and looked poised to secure another podium finish. However, disaster struck in the closing stages when damage to the rear of the Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 forced the car into retirement, ending what had been a promising race.

The Super Touring Class provided Wing Hin Motorsports with its biggest success of the weekend through Nabil Azlan. Starting second in Race 1, Nabil grabbed the lead at the start and gradually stretched his advantage while under pressure from a tightly packed chasing group.

A timely safety car period reshaped the race strategy, forcing teams to make critical decisions during the pit stop window. After rejoining in eighth place following his mandatory stop, Nabil launched a determined recovery drive, climbing back through the field to finish second on the road.

His efforts were later rewarded with victory after the leading car received a time penalty for a pit lane speed infringement. The result handed Wing Hin Motorsports its first win of the weekend and reinforced Nabil’s status as one of the championship contenders.

Elsewhere in the Super Touring field, teammates Nick Teo and Ian Wong finished eighth in their Toyota Vios, while Jwan Hii and Dannies Ng crossed the line tenth in their Toyota Yaris. The pairing of Varunchit Wattanathanakun and Mekkaradkeeta Kalantananda completed the race in 14th position.

Sunday’s Race 2 delivered one of the most dramatic moments of the entire event. Nabil had fought his way from third to second and was closing in on the race leader when the leading Honda CR-Z suddenly slowed with a gearbox issue on the final lap.

With little time to react, Nabil’s Toyota Vios made contact with the slowing car, launching airborne before flipping and coming to rest upside down in the middle of the circuit. The frightening accident immediately brought out the red flag, but fortunately Nabil emerged from the wreckage uninjured.

Race officials subsequently reverted the results to the previous lap, awarding Nabil third place and securing another podium finish for the Malaysian team.

Further down the order, Varunchit and Mekkaradkeeta finished tenth, while Teo and Wong took 11th. Hii and Ng were unable to finish after making contact with the circuit barriers.

By the end of the weekend, Wing Hin Motorsports had collected four podium finishes from four races, including a race victory, while also demonstrating resilience in the face of penalties, mechanical issues and major accidents.

The TSS The Super Series and Thailand Super Series now head to Malaysia for Round 3, which will take place at the iconic Sepang International Circuit from 21 to 23 August, where Wing Hin Motorsports will look to continue its championship challenge on home soil.
