After weeks of anticipation, 16-year-old Ethen Low is finally ready to make his competitive debut in the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Vios Challenge when Round 2 of the championship takes place at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit from 20 to 21 June.

Low, who recently celebrated his 16th birthday on 3 June, becomes the youngest driver on the grid in the Rookie Class and joins the ranks of UMW Toyota Motor and GAZOO Racing Malaysia’s Young Driver Development Programme. His long-awaited debut comes after a mandatory wait to obtain a national racing licence from the Motorsports Association of Malaysia, allowing him to compete officially in the country’s premier one-make racing series.

Although he enters the championship having missed the opening round in April, Low remains optimistic about his chances of making an impact. The young racer spent the past two months sharpening his driving skills through private track sessions while focusing on physical and mental preparation ahead of his first race weekend.

Despite starting the season at a points deficit, Low believes there is still enough time to challenge for championship honours. He expects intense competition from the other Rookie Class contenders, who have already demonstrated strong pace and consistency during the opening round.

The Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia Young Talent Development Programme, now in its sixth consecutive year, continues to serve as a pathway for aspiring racers transitioning from simulator racing and karting into professional saloon car competition. The programme has successfully developed numerous drivers who have gone on to achieve success both domestically and internationally.

This season’s rookie line-up features a highly competitive field. Current championship leader Ervin Lim, an 18-year-old simulator racer and karter, heads the standings after securing a race victory and a podium finish in Round 1. Close behind is Ngo Yong Jian, another simulator racing talent who matched Lim’s results and sits second overall. Also in contention are 17-year-old Imran Iskandar, who recorded two runner-up finishes in the opening round, and simulator racer Megat Damian.

Season 9 of the Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Challenge continues the tradition of close and exciting competition using identically prepared fourth-generation Toyota Vios race cars. Introduced in 2017, the championship remains the longest-running manufacturer-backed production saloon car racing series in the country and offers a total prize pool of RM876,000 across four rounds.

Round 2 will feature 37 entries competing across the Super Sporting, Sporting and Rookie categories. The Classic Challenge category will add further excitement with 12 entries and 20 drivers battling in older-generation Vios race cars. Among the notable entries are the all-female pairing of Nurul Auni and Nurul Husna Nasharuddin representing Rock Racing, brothers Brendan Paul and Bradley Benedict Anthony, as well as father-and-son duo Shanmuganathan Arumugan and Ashen Shanmuganathan.

Competition is expected to be fierce across all categories. In the Super Sporting Class, Freddie Ang of Telagamas Toyota leads the standings with 37 points after a strong opening round. Laser Motor Racing’s Ady Rahimy remains within striking distance on 33 points, while teammate Nabil Azlan occupies third place with 27 points.

The Sporting Class sees Justin Toh of BAE Racing by ES Yang at the top of the leaderboard with 31 points following two second-place finishes. He is pursued by Awesome Racing Team’s Teo Hong Zhou and Heiwa Racing Team’s Choo Yong Choon, who remain firmly in contention.

Meanwhile, the Classic Challenge category will once again spotlight the dominant Thai pairing of Surasak Dakeng and Varunchit Wattanathanakun, who swept both races in Round 1. Their closest challengers, Kegani Racing Academy teammates Kenny Lee and Loke Yin Yi, will be aiming to close the gap after recording back-to-back runner-up finishes.

As the championship resumes at Sepang, much attention will be focused on Ethen Low’s debut performance. While the young racer begins his campaign later than his rivals, his determination and preparation could make him one of the most exciting drivers to watch throughout the remainder of the season.
