Proton has successfully extended the next phase of its Proton 10,000 sMILEs Expedition beyond Malaysia’s borders, embarking on a cross-border drive from Sabah into Brunei that showcased the brand’s commitment to real-world vehicle performance, fuel efficiency, and everyday practicality.
The expedition saw a convoy of 10 Proton vehicles travel from Kota Kinabalu through Beaufort before crossing into Brunei Darussalam. Featuring the Proton Saga, Proton X50, and Proton S70, the journey was designed to demonstrate how the vehicles perform in realistic ownership conditions, including highway cruising, urban driving, border crossings, stop-and-go traffic, and long-distance travel.
Beyond testing vehicle capabilities, the route symbolised the strong ties between Malaysia and Brunei, highlighting the role of mobility in fostering regional connectivity, economic cooperation, and tourism development while supporting the aspirations of Visit Malaysia 2026.
A key objective of the expedition was to showcase Proton vehicles in genuine road environments rather than controlled test settings. Throughout the journey, the convoy encountered a diverse mix of driving conditions that allowed each model to demonstrate its strengths in comfort, efficiency, and performance.
The Proton Saga continued to affirm its reputation as a practical and dependable sedan. Powered by a 1.5-litre i-GT engine paired with a CVT transmission, the model delivered strong fuel efficiency and reliability across long-distance routes. Its spacious 420-litre boot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, reverse camera, and parking sensors contributed to a comfortable and convenient travel experience.
Meanwhile, the Proton S70 highlighted its credentials as a modern sports sedan built for both daily use and extended road trips. Equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-litre i-GT engine, the S70 combined responsive performance with impressive fuel economy throughout the cross-border drive. Features such as a spacious cabin, 500-litre luggage capacity, 360-degree HD camera with 3D display, and remote engine start enhanced convenience and comfort for occupants.
The Proton X50 also demonstrated why it remains one of Malaysia’s most popular SUVs. Its turbocharged 1.5-litre engine delivered confident performance and refinement across varying road conditions. Advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, including Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, contributed to a reassuring driving experience. Additional features such as a 360-degree HD camera with Transparent View and Auto Park Assist further improved usability during urban and border-crossing situations.
Before heading into Brunei, the convoy made a strategic stop at Proton OBM Automobil Beaufort, where the dealership unveiled its refreshed corporate identity.
The upgraded facility reflects Proton’s ongoing efforts to enhance customer engagement and elevate retail standards. More than a visual transformation, the refreshed showroom is designed to provide a more welcoming environment while improving customer interaction throughout the ownership journey. Visitors, dealer representatives, and key opinion leaders were also given the opportunity to explore Proton’s latest models in a setting aligned with modern consumer expectations.
The Brunei leg of the expedition concluded with a customer and stakeholder engagement event at the Econ Motors Showroom. The gathering brought together customers, community members, dealership representatives, and industry stakeholders to celebrate the connections fostered through regional mobility.
Adding significance to the event was the attendance of representatives from Brunei Tourism and senior officials from both countries, including His Excellency Datuk Mohd Aini Atan, Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.
During the event, Proton presented commemorative tokens to Brunei Tourism, PAD Motors, and distinguished guests, symbolising the strong partnership and goodwill shared between Malaysia and Brunei.
The Sabah-to-Brunei chapter of the Proton 10,000 sMILEs Expedition underscored the wider impact of mobility beyond transportation. Through customer engagement, dealer collaboration, and cross-border participation, the initiative highlighted how automotive connectivity can support tourism, strengthen business relationships, and encourage cultural exchange throughout Borneo.
The programme also complements the goals of Visit Malaysia 2026 by promoting Borneo as a connected destination where road travel can contribute to economic development and regional tourism growth.
According to Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, the expedition demonstrates how mobility can unite communities and create meaningful connections across borders. He noted that the Sabah-to-Brunei journey provided an ideal platform to showcase the fuel efficiency, comfort, intelligent technologies, and long-distance capabilities of Proton vehicles while further strengthening the brand’s relationship with customers and partners across Brunei and the wider Borneo region.
