The All-New Proton Saga has added another achievement to its name after securing the 2026 Golden Osmanthus Industrial Design Award (GODA), earning international recognition for its design and reinforcing its position in Malaysia’s competitive A-segment sedan market. The national carmaker’s long-running best-seller received the Product Award in the Smart Transportation category under the competition’s ASEAN Application Track. The accolade recognises the Saga’s design approach and its relevance to the needs of motorists across Southeast Asia.
Held in Nanning, Guangxi, China, the awards brought together industrial design entries evaluated on their practicality, market suitability and potential to address the needs of consumers across the region. For Proton, the recognition highlights how the Saga’s appeal extends beyond affordability, with its design also receiving attention on an international platform.
The Saga was presented to an international judging panel by Norhelmey Lobb bin Saad Lobb, Proton’s Head of Advanced Design, during a live evaluation session. His presentation highlighted the sedan’s design philosophy, value proposition and suitability for its intended markets. Competing alongside automotive entries from manufacturers such as Wuling and Dongfeng, the Saga was assessed on more than its exterior styling. The judges also examined its potential for left-hand-drive markets and its ability to remain competitive as the automotive industry increasingly embraces electrification.
The ASEAN Application Track places particular emphasis on designs that respond to regional conditions, including climate, consumer preferences, driving habits and cultural considerations. Product feasibility and commercialisation potential also form part of the assessment. These criteria make the award particularly relevant to the Saga, a model developed to serve everyday motorists in Malaysia and potentially appeal to buyers in other markets. Rather than focusing solely on visual appeal, the evaluation considers how well a product translates its design into practical value for the people who use it.
For Malaysian buyers, the Saga’s latest achievement adds another dimension to its established reputation as an accessible and practical sedan. First-time car buyers, young professionals and families looking for an affordable daily driver remain an important audience for the model. International design recognition could further strengthen its appeal among customers who want a car that balances cost-conscious ownership with styling that feels contemporary and thoughtfully executed.
The award also reflects Proton’s efforts to evolve the Saga while preserving the qualities that have made it a familiar name among Malaysian motorists. As the country’s first national car, the model carries considerable historical significance, making each new generation an opportunity to build on its legacy while adapting to changing customer expectations.
Azlan Othman, Chief Designer of Proton Design, said the achievement marked another milestone in the Saga’s long history. “The Golden Osmanthus Industrial Design Award for Smart Transportation is another milestone in the long and storied history of the Proton Saga, Malaysia’s first national vehicle,” he said. Azlan added that Proton Design had continued refining the model’s styling over the years while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original. Combined with technological and safety updates, these efforts help keep the Saga relevant and popular among Proton customers.
The GODA recognition gives the All-New Proton Saga another selling point in a segment where affordability, practicality and everyday usability remain important considerations. While an award alone may not determine a buyer’s decision, international recognition provides additional validation of the design work behind the sedan. It also highlights Proton’s continued efforts to develop products that cater to local needs while demonstrating relevance beyond Malaysia.
For motorists considering their next A-segment sedan, the All-New Proton Saga now has another accolade to add to its list of credentials. Interested buyers can visit authorised Proton showrooms nationwide to view the model in person and arrange a test drive.
