SAIC Motor Malaysia has expanded its locally assembled MGS5 EV range with the introduction of the new COM variant, bringing the rear-wheel-drive electric B-segment SUV to a more accessible price point of RM103,900. Available in Peninsular Malaysia, excluding road tax and insurance, the MGS5 EV COM joins the existing LUX variant as the second option in the line-up. With its lower entry price, MG aims to make electric mobility accessible to a broader range of Malaysian customers while retaining the model’s focus on performance, safety and technology.
Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, said the new variant reflects the company’s efforts to make electric mobility more attainable without compromising the overall driving experience. “The SUV segment continues to see strong growth alongside increasing demand for electric vehicles. With the introduction of the MGS5 EV COM, we are making rear-wheel drive electric B-segment SUV ownership more accessible to a broader group of Malaysians,” said Qi. “We believe this new variant offers exceptional value and allows more customers to experience the performance, technology and quality that define the MG brand.”
The MGS5 EV COM is powered by a 49kWh battery, with its rear-mounted electric motor producing 170PS and 250Nm of torque. It offers a claimed driving range of up to 340km, while DC fast charging is supported at up to 120kW. Above it, the MGS5 EV LUX uses a larger 62kWh battery and a more powerful electric motor delivering 203PS and 350Nm. Its driving range is rated at up to 446km, with DC fast charging capability of up to 150kW.
Despite its more affordable positioning, the COM retains a substantial amount of the equipment found on the LUX. Both variants come with seven airbags and MG Pilot ADAS 2.5, which includes advanced driver assistance features such as Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control. The MGS5 EV also employs an ultra-thin battery layout designed to lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity. This helps improve driving stability while also contributing to better utilisation of interior space.
The main differences between the two variants are concentrated around comfort, styling and convenience equipment. The COM comes with fabric seats instead of the LUX’s perforated leatherette upholstery, 17-inch black alloy wheels in place of 18-inch alloys, and does without the panoramic sunroof.
The higher-specification LUX adds a number of premium features, including ventilated and power-adjustable front seats, MG’s signature perforated leatherette upholstery, a heated leather steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels and a hands-free powered tailgate. Both versions feature a contemporary dark interior, while exterior colour availability differs between the variants. The COM can be specified in Silver or Grey, while the LUX is offered in Gold, Silver and Grey.
Adding further confidence for buyers, every MGS5 EV comes with MG’s ownership assurance package. This includes a seven-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 180,000km warranty for the battery pack, and an eight-year or 160,000km warranty for the Motor Control Unit (MCU), whichever comes first.
The MGS5 EV COM is now available for viewing and bookings at MG showrooms nationwide. As part of its launch campaign, the new variant is offered with a RM3,000 rebate and a complimentary wallbox, further enhancing its value proposition. Customers who test-drive the MGS5 EV from now until 30 September 2026 will also stand a chance to win a MacBook Neo or RM50 in Touch ’n Go eWallet credits.
