Selangor emerged as the overall champion at the national finals of the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM)–Perodua Badminton Talent Development Programme (BTDP), held at IOI Sports Centre in Putrajaya on 5 November 2026. The programme, which aims to identify and nurture young badminton talent across the country, brought together schoolchildren aged between nine and 12 years old, with 2,800 students participating in this year’s initiative.

First introduced in 2018, BTDP has become Perodua’s largest corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. Over the years, it has benefited approximately 14,000 students through a nationwide network of 70 training centres, supported by 140 teacher-coaches. According to Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, the programme was established to give young aspiring badminton players access to structured training and professional coaching from an early age.

Selected participants receive access to proper training facilities and professional coaching, opportunities that would otherwise typically be available at specialised sports schools. He added that providing early exposure to quality badminton training is important in developing the next generation of players who could eventually represent the country at higher levels of competition.

BTDP is open to students aged nine to 12 from national schools, Chinese national-type schools (SJKC) and Tamil national-type schools (SJKT) under the Ministry of Education. Training is conducted through the programme’s 70 designated centres nationwide. Beyond developing sporting abilities, the programme also recognises participants’ achievements through educational savings rewards. Winners receive National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN-i) certificates worth RM500 for first place, RM300 for second place and RM150 for third place.

The 2026 competition featured individual and doubles categories across several age groups, with young players from Selangor, Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Perak taking home national titles.
