GWM Malaysia has reached two significant milestones in its local manufacturing operations, exporting more than 1,100 locally assembled GWM WEY G9 vehicles to Thailand and Indonesia while surpassing 10,000 vehicles assembled domestically since local production began in October 2024. The achievements highlight Malaysia’s growing role in GWM’s regional manufacturing strategy, with locally assembled vehicles now serving markets beyond the country.

They also reflect the development of the company’s local assembly operations as it expands its presence in the region’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) segment. The export milestone marks a step forward for Malaysia’s automotive manufacturing industry, demonstrating how local production facilities can support both domestic demand and the wider ASEAN market.

More than 1,100 units of the GWM WEY G9 have been exported from Malaysia to Thailand and Indonesia, extending the reach of vehicles assembled locally to neighbouring markets. Positioned as GWM’s flagship luxury MPV, the WEY G9 combines hybrid powertrain technology with a premium-focused cabin and all-wheel-drive capability. Its export programme represents an expansion of Malaysia’s role within the company’s regional operations, with local production supporting demand in other ASEAN countries.

According to Stan Li Hao, Managing Director of Commercial Operations at GWM Malaysia, the milestone reflects the capabilities developed through collaboration with Malaysian partners. He said Malaysia remains an important part of GWM’s ASEAN growth strategy, adding that the arrival of locally assembled WEY G9 vehicles in Thailand and Indonesia demonstrates the country’s increasing contribution to the company’s regional operations.

GWM’s cumulative vehicle assembly volume in Malaysia has now exceeded 10,000 units since operations began in October 2024. The journey started with the GWM HAVAL H6 HEV, assembled in Melaka in partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB). The locally assembled lineup subsequently expanded in 2025 with the introduction of the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV.

The portfolio has since grown further with the introduction of the new GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV, adding another hybrid variant to the range produced locally. Beyond the number of vehicles assembled, the expansion of local production also provides opportunities to develop manufacturing expertise, transfer technical knowledge and strengthen workforce capabilities. Collaboration between international automotive manufacturers and Malaysian partners can also encourage greater participation by local businesses in the automotive supply chain. For GWM, surpassing 10,000 assembled vehicles represents a foundation for further development as it continues to broaden its product offerings and manufacturing activities in Malaysia.

Since entering the Malaysian market in 2022, GWM has expanded its vehicle lineup, dealer network and local assembly operations as part of its longer-term growth plans. Cui Anqi, Managing Director of Corporate Affairs at GWM Malaysia, said the country is becoming increasingly important to the company’s regional manufacturing and business strategy. She added that the company’s progress reflects its confidence in Malaysia and its intention to work alongside local industry partners to create more opportunities for Malaysian capabilities to contribute to the wider ASEAN automotive market.

GWM Malaysia Chief Operating Officer Roslan Abdullah also highlighted the importance of its manufacturing partnerships in achieving the 10,000-unit milestone. He noted that the progress goes beyond production numbers, with the company aiming to support the development of Malaysia’s automotive industry through the introduction of new technologies, expanded local assembly activities and regional exports.

The latest milestones underline GWM’s shift from a primarily domestic-market focus towards a broader regional manufacturing and export operation. With more than 1,100 WEY G9 vehicles shipped to Thailand and Indonesia, alongside cumulative local assembly exceeding 10,000 units, Malaysia is taking on a more prominent position within the company’s ASEAN strategy.

As GWM continues to expand its electrified vehicle portfolio, the development of local assembly operations could provide further opportunities to strengthen manufacturing capabilities and increase Malaysia’s participation in the regional automotive supply chain. The next phase of growth will depend on how the company develops its local production capacity, works with Malaysian partners and expands its presence across neighbouring markets. For now, the latest figures mark a clear step forward in establishing Malaysia as a production base serving customers both at home and across ASEAN.
