OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia has officially launched the JAECOO J5 EV, marking the brand’s first fully electric vehicle in the Malaysian market and an important step in its broader electrification strategy. Priced at RM118,800 on-the-road without insurance, the J5 EV enters the premium B-segment electric SUV market with a combination of electric performance, advanced driver-assistance technology, practicality and lifestyle-focused features.
More importantly, the J5 EV becomes the first JAECOO model to be locally assembled under a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) programme, highlighting OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia’s intention to establish a stronger foundation for EV production in the country. “The J5 EV marks an important chapter for OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia as we take our first step into fully electric mobility. The J5 EV is developed as a lifestyle SUV that brings together performance, technology, practicality and the freedom to explore,” said Chris Tan, Head of OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia. “As we enter this next phase of electrification, local assembly of the J5 EV further reflects our long-term commitment to building a stronger foundation for electric mobility in Malaysia,” he added.
The J5 EV adopts a clean and distinctive SUV design, combining its proportions with an Active Grille Shutter and 18-inch aerodynamic wheels designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency. It also offers 174 mm of ground clearance and a 450 mm wading depth, giving it added versatility when dealing with varying road conditions.
Inside, the cabin is designed around space and practicality. A large 1.45-metre panoramic glass roof brings additional natural light into the cabin, while storage capacity includes a 35-litre front trunk and 480 litres of rear boot space. With the rear seats folded, total cargo capacity increases to 1,284 litres. Parking and low-speed manoeuvring are further supported by a 540-degree HD Surround View system, giving drivers a more comprehensive view around the vehicle.
Powering the J5 EV is a fully electric drivetrain producing 155 kW of maximum power and 288 Nm of torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, providing a level of performance that should make it equally comfortable in urban traffic and on longer highway journeys. Energy is supplied by a 58.9 kWh LFP battery from CATL, with the J5 EV offering a claimed range of up to 461 km under the NEDC cycle. For home charging, the vehicle supports 11 kW AC charging, with a 10-to-100 per cent charge taking approximately seven hours.
Technology is another major focus of the J5 EV, with the SUV equipped with 19 Level 2+ Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) functions. These include Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Prevention, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control.
The system also incorporates Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Braking, Traffic Jam Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, Door Opening Warning and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, among other features. Adding to its safety credentials is a high-torsional-rigidity body structure rated at 35,900 Nm/degree, designed to contribute to structural strength and occupant protection. The JAECOO smart ecosystem also allows drivers to access vehicle functions and information through connected technology, adding another layer of convenience to everyday use.
JAECOO has also positioned the J5 EV as a lifestyle vehicle rather than simply another urban runabout. Among its more distinctive features are Pet Mode and Camping Mode, while a 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system allows the vehicle to supply power to compatible electrical equipment. This could prove useful for activities such as camping, outdoor recreation and leisure trips, giving owners the ability to use the vehicle as a portable power source. A selection of dedicated lifestyle accessories further expands the J5 EV’s versatility.
OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia is also placing emphasis on ownership support as it seeks to make the transition to electric mobility easier for buyers. The J5 EV comes with a seven-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, while its high-voltage battery is covered for 10 years or 200,000 km.
Customers will also have access to the brand’s growing EV-ready nationwide network, which currently comprises 56 showrooms and 53 service centres. The company says home-charging solutions and public charging support will complement the network, giving customers a more complete EV ownership ecosystem.
The J5 EV’s arrival also represents a significant development for JAECOO’s manufacturing operations in Malaysia. The model is locally assembled under the CKD programme at the Chery Corporate Malaysia factory in Shah Alam, making it the brand’s first locally produced New Energy Vehicle (NEV).
Beyond the J5 EV itself, the CKD programme is expected to contribute to the development of local manufacturing capabilities, technical expertise and the wider automotive supply chain. For OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia, the J5 EV therefore serves not only as its first fully electric model but also as a foundation for its future electrification plans.
The JAECOO J5 EV is offered in a single, comprehensively equipped variant at RM118,800 OTR without insurance, with the first customer deliveries scheduled to begin by 31 October 2026. Three exterior colours are available: Alpine Green, Fjord Grey and Carbon Crystal Black.
