The Proton X50 continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Malaysia’s most influential SUVs, with a recent customer survey revealing that buyers are increasingly prioritising premium technology, driving performance, intelligent safety systems, and overall value when choosing their next vehicle.
Conducted among owners of the all-new Proton X50 introduced in July 2025, the survey highlights a significant shift in consumer behaviour within Malaysia’s highly competitive B-segment SUV category. While affordability remains important, modern buyers are now placing greater emphasis on design sophistication, advanced features, driving refinement, and long-term ownership experience.
The findings suggest the Proton X50 has successfully positioned itself as a premium yet attainable SUV for Malaysians seeking a balance between practicality and lifestyle aspirations.
According to the survey, the majority of Proton X50 owners are professionals and working adults in their 30s and 40s, many with young families. With an average household income of approximately RM8,000 per month, the model has emerged as an attractive option for middle-income Malaysians upgrading from smaller vehicles into a more spacious and versatile SUV.
Owners frequently described the X50 as offering a premium ownership experience typically associated with more expensive vehicles. Key highlights included its contemporary cabin design, sophisticated styling, intelligent driver assistance systems, and responsive turbocharged performance.
Among the strongest purchase factors identified were value for money, strong acceleration, handling confidence, and premium interior quality. Buyers also pointed to the SUV’s infotainment technologies and intelligent driving features as major advantages over competitors within the same price range.
Particular praise was directed at the X50’s 1.5-litre 4-cylinder i-GT engine, which many respondents said delivered confident overtaking performance and smooth long-distance highway driving. The refined cabin environment and modern digital interface also stood out as features buyers normally expect from higher-priced SUVs.
One of the survey’s most significant findings was the Proton X50’s ability to attract customers from multiple segments of the automotive market.
While 21 percent of respondents were first-time car buyers, the majority were existing vehicle owners transitioning from hatchbacks and sedans into SUVs. Many had previously owned popular national models before selecting the X50 as their next-stage family vehicle.
The survey also revealed that buyers actively compared the X50 against a wide range of Japanese and Chinese rivals before making their final purchase decision. This reflects the model’s growing competitiveness in one of Malaysia’s most fiercely contested automotive segments.
Beyond the vehicle itself, buyers cited confidence in PROTON’s extensive dealership and aftersales network as another key reason for choosing the X50. The availability of nationwide one-stop centres covering sales, service, and spare parts gave customers added reassurance regarding long-term ownership support.
The survey further showed that each Proton X50 variant appeals to a distinct group of buyers.
Customers choosing the Executive variant were generally younger and more value-conscious, focusing on practicality, affordability, and daily usability while still appreciating modern styling and strong driving dynamics.
Meanwhile, Premium variant buyers tended to prioritise safety and family-oriented features. Technologies such as Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Lane Change Assist (LSA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with stop-and-go functionality, and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) were among the strongest purchase motivators for this group.
For buyers opting for the Flagship variant, the attraction centred around achieving the most complete ownership package possible. Typically representing higher-income households, these customers valued the SUV’s advanced safety technologies, premium comfort amenities, and elevated cabin experience, positioning the X50 as a sophisticated lifestyle-focused SUV.
Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar, said the survey findings reinforce PROTON’s strategy of making advanced automotive technologies more accessible to Malaysian consumers.
He noted that the Proton X50 has consistently challenged expectations in the B-segment SUV market since its debut, while the latest findings show that Malaysian buyers increasingly value vehicles that combine emotional appeal with everyday practicality.
He also highlighted the growing number of customers comparing the X50 directly against established non-national brands before ultimately choosing PROTON, describing it as a sign of increasing confidence in the company’s products, technologies, and ownership experience.
As customer expectations continue evolving, PROTON aims to further strengthen the X50 lineup to ensure it remains one of the country’s most compelling SUV offerings.
