Gentari Sdn Bhd and BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the deployment of high-power electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Malaysia, including BYD Flash Charging technology and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The collaboration will focus on assessing opportunities to introduce the charging technology locally, with the aim of improving charging convenience and supporting the continued growth of electric mobility in the country.
According to BYD, its Flash Charging technology can provide approximately 400 kilometres of driving range in as little as five minutes for compatible vehicles under optimal conditions. The actual charging performance will depend on factors such as vehicle compatibility, battery conditions and the charging environment. Gentari is a clean energy solutions company wholly owned by PETRONAS, while BYD Malaysia represents the global EV manufacturer in the Malaysian market.
The agreement comes amid continued growth in Malaysia’s EV market. A total of 53,537 new EV registrations were recorded during the first nine months of 2026, representing a 98.8% increase compared with the corresponding period last year. The expansion of the EV market is expected to increase demand for accessible and reliable charging facilities.
The collaboration also aligns with Malaysia’s wider efforts to support vehicle electrification, including the Government’s target of establishing 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030. Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia. Through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub, the company also provides access to approximately 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India.
Sushil Purohit, Group Chief Executive Officer of Gentari, said the next phase of EV adoption would depend on the availability, convenience and reliability of charging services. He noted that charging speed is one consideration, alongside the placement of charging facilities, power supply reliability and operational performance. The collaboration will combine Gentari’s experience in developing and operating charging networks with BYD’s capabilities in EVs, batteries and high-power charging technology.
Under the MoU, both companies will identify suitable locations for potential BYD Flash Charging installations, including intercity routes connecting major population centres. The assessment will cover several areas, including electricity supply infrastructure, battery energy storage requirements, technical and commercial feasibility, project development opportunities and potential operating arrangements.
Battery energy storage systems will also form part of the evaluation, with both parties examining the requirements for supporting high-power charging facilities at selected locations. The agreement establishes a framework for further assessment and cooperation. Any future deployment will depend on the outcome of these evaluations and the relevant project requirements. In addition to EV charging, Gentari and BYD will explore potential cooperation in renewable energy generation and energy storage. These areas will draw on Gentari’s experience in clean energy solutions and BYD’s capabilities in energy storage technology.
Liu Xueliang, Vice President of BYD and General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, said the company had been developing charging technology to address charging time as one of the considerations for EV users. He added that Malaysia was an important market for BYD and that the collaboration with Gentari would allow both parties to assess how Flash Charging could be introduced to support local EV users.
Jacob Ma, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, said the company’s efforts extended beyond vehicle sales to include supporting the overall EV ownership experience. He noted that charging infrastructure was an important part of providing customers with greater confidence when considering an electric vehicle, and described the MoU as a step towards developing Malaysia’s EV ecosystem.
The MoU was signed by Sushil Purohit and Jacob Ma, with representatives from PETRONAS, Gentari and BYD in attendance. Among those present were Marina Md Taib, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at PETRONAS; Dato’ Ir Ts Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Senior Vice President of Projects, Engineering & Technology at PETRONAS; Fadzrul Ahmad, Chief Green Mobility Officer at Gentari; and Haikal Zubir, Head of Green Mobility Malaysia at Gentari.
BYD representatives included Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Company, and Liu Xueliang. The agreement marks an initial step towards evaluating high-power EV charging technology and related energy solutions for the Malaysian market. Rather than confirming an immediate rollout, the MoU sets out areas for both companies to study, including potential locations, infrastructure requirements and commercial arrangements.
As Malaysia’s EV registrations continue to increase, the findings of these assessments could help inform future charging infrastructure development, particularly along routes connecting major population centres. Any resulting projects will depend on technical feasibility, investment considerations and the parties’ subsequent decisions.
