GWM Malaysia has opened bookings for the new GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV, expanding its premium MPV lineup with a conventional hybrid option for customers who want luxury, strong performance and improved fuel efficiency without the need for external charging. The announcement comes as the existing GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV approaches 2,000 units delivered nationwide.
According to official manufacturer sales figures, the plug-in hybrid model is currently Malaysia’s best-selling luxury MPV, providing a strong foundation for the arrival of its new hybrid sibling. With the addition of the HEV variant, Malaysian buyers will have greater flexibility in choosing a powertrain that suits their driving habits, whether for daily commutes, family outings or long-distance journeys.
At the heart of the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV is GWM’s Hi4 (Hybrid Intelligent 4WD) technology, which combines the performance benefits of four-wheel drive with the efficiency advantages of hybrid propulsion. Its powertrain comprises a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, a four-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), dual electric motors and a 1.67 kWh hybrid battery. Together, the system produces a combined output of 358 PS and 782 Nm of torque.
These figures promise plenty of pulling power for a premium MPV, particularly when carrying passengers and luggage. The hybrid system is also designed to deliver responsive acceleration and smooth performance, balancing the demands of urban driving with the needs of longer highway trips. Unlike a plug-in hybrid, the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV does not require an external charging source. Owners can simply refuel at a petrol station and continue their journey, making it an appealing alternative for drivers who want the benefits of electrified motoring without having to plan their routines around charging facilities.
Beyond its new powertrain, the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV retains the premium features that underpin the model’s luxury positioning. The cabin is designed to provide a refined and comfortable environment, featuring Nappa leather seating, active noise cancellation and a premium sound system. Combined with its spacious three-row layout, these amenities are intended to make journeys more relaxing for both the driver and passengers.

The arrival of the HEV gives customers two electrified powertrain options within the WEY G9 family, each catering to different ownership preferences. The PHEV offers the flexibility of external charging, while the HEV is designed for those who prefer a hybrid vehicle that can be refuelled conventionally without depending on charging infrastructure.
According to Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia, offering both options allows customers to select a vehicle that better matches their lifestyle and driving requirements while retaining the premium experience associated with the WEY G9. The move also reflects GWM Malaysia’s wider strategy of expanding its powertrain offerings across electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) models.
