Proton is extending a helping hand to Nepal following the country’s recent floods, contributing drones worth approximately RM200,000 to support humanitarian and disaster response efforts. The drones were handed over to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) at the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) headquarters in Pulau Meranti. They will subsequently be transported to Nepal by SMART as part of Malaysia’s ongoing humanitarian mission.

Rather than being a short-term loan, the drones will remain in Nepal following their delivery and are intended for use by the Government of Nepal in its disaster response efforts. The technology is expected to give emergency teams an extra set of eyes from above, allowing them to survey affected areas and assess locations that may be difficult, dangerous or inaccessible from the ground. This aerial view can help authorities better understand conditions on the ground before deciding where personnel and resources are needed most.

Before the drones are handed over to the relevant Nepalese agency, the SMART team will provide training on their operation to ensure they can be used effectively. Representing Proton at the handover was Edmund Lim Meng Thong, Chief Executive Officer of Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB), while NADMA was represented by its Director General, Dato’ Meor Ismail bin Meor Akim. Representatives from Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present.

For Proton, the contribution goes beyond technology. It reflects the company’s intention to provide practical assistance to communities facing the aftermath of natural disasters. “During a disaster, having a clear view of affected areas can make a real difference to response efforts,” said Edmund. “Drones can provide valuable aerial visibility, particularly in locations that may be difficult or unsafe to reach immediately.”

Proton’s connection with Nepal also extends into the automotive market. The company is represented there by its authorised distributor, Jagdamba Motors, which is also responsible for the Proton e.MAS brand. As Proton continues to build its presence in Nepal, the company says it hopes to contribute not only as an automotive brand, but also as a member of the wider community.
