Malaysia’s Merdeka weekend is set to get a high-speed makeover as the 2026 MSF Merdeka Race returns to PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit on 29 and 30 August, bringing together more than 200 racing machines and over 300 competitors across four- and two-wheel categories. Now in its ninth consecutive edition, the event has established itself as one of the highlights of Malaysia’s motorsport calendar, with this year’s programme headlined by the gruelling MSF SuperTurismo Merdeka 111 Endurance for cars and the MotoMSF Superbikes Merdeka 33 Endurance.

The headline four-wheel race will see competitors tackle 111 laps of the 5.534km circuit, covering approximately 615km in a non-stop battle that begins at 5.30pm on Sunday. With the race expected to run into the evening, teams will be fighting to reach the chequered flag shortly before midnight as Malaysia prepares to celebrate its 69th Merdeka Day. Unlike conventional sprint races, the 111-lap endurance event places as much emphasis on strategy and teamwork as outright pace. Each car must have at least two drivers, while teams are required to make a minimum of two compulsory three-minute pitstops. With no fixed limit on individual driving stints, competitors will have the freedom to devise their own driver-change and pitstop strategies.

The race is divided into seven classes: Super Series Limited, EXN GT86 x BRZ Racing Cup, Super Compatto, Standard Production, Standard Production MAX, Super Production and K-Series Battle. The weekend’s action begins on Saturday night, 29 August, with three sprint races under the lights. The Super Unlimited class will contest two five-lap races, while the Skilldrvn One Make Race Series will stage an eight-lap encounter, with racing scheduled from 9.00pm until 11.35pm.

Sunday will shift the spotlight to the two-wheel competitors, beginning with the American V-Twin Cup by Prodigy Racecraft. The seven-lap race will see Harley-Davidson motorcycles take to the circuit before the main superbike endurance contest gets underway. The MotoMSF Superbikes Merdeka 33 Endurance will take place on Sepang’s South Track from 11.30am to 2.00pm. Covering 33 laps and almost 183km, the race requires two riders to share driving duties, with compulsory pitstops every eight laps.

The endurance challenge is particularly demanding given Malaysia’s heat, with riders required to complete lengthy stints while wearing full racing leathers. The event has also attracted competitors from across the region, building on the growing reputation of the superbike endurance race since its introduction last year. Four-wheel racing returns in the afternoon, with the second Skilldrvn One Make Race Series race featuring 10 laps from 2.15pm. This will be followed at 3.00pm by the Merdeka 75 Cup, a 75-minute endurance contest featuring four classes: Saga Cup, MyVi Cup, CamPro Cup and Tuner Production.

According to MSF Principal Adian Yein Khalid, the continued growth of the event has made the 111-lap endurance race an important milestone for the club. “The Merdeka race has grown tremendously over the years, and being able to put together the annual 111 laps endurance is a significant milestone for MSF,” said Adian. He added that the event’s strength lies in its ability to bring together experienced racers, newcomers, established teams and international competitors on the same grid, creating a demanding test of speed, consistency, strategy and teamwork.

Among those returning this year will be veteran racers Faidzil Alang and Mohamed Hafez, who will defend the overall Merdeka Race title they secured last year. They will face strong competition from Malaysian drivers as well as racers representing Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Beyond the racing, the MSF Merdeka Race is also positioned as a family-friendly motorsport weekend. Paddock passes will be available at the circuit for RM45, providing access from 10.00am to 11.00pm. Children below 12 years old can enter for free. Visitors will also be able to explore the paddock, check out participating vendors, browse motorsport merchandise and refuel at a selection of food trucks throughout the weekend.

Organised by Kelab Sukan Motor MSF Malaysia, an official club registered with the Malaysian Sports Commission and an affiliate member of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM), the 2026 MSF Merdeka Race promises to combine grassroots racing, regional competition and endurance motorsport into one action-packed Merdeka weekend at Sepang.
