Not too long ago, after driving the Perodua Traz, I established that it’s a great product from Perodua. However, if you’re someone who likes to personalise your car, the standard Traz may feel a little too vanilla. In typical Perodua fashion, the company introduced the GearUp package for owners who want to spice up the look of their Traz. But as someone who doesn’t usually spend money on accessories, is it actually worth paying extra to make your Traz look a little sportier? Let’s find out.

The GearUp range is divided into several packages, allowing owners to choose only the upgrades they actually want instead of paying for everything at once. The first package is the body kit, which includes an enhanced front bumper with guide lights, side skirts and a rear bumper extension. While the front bumper comes with the guide lights, the wiring kit is sold separately. The body kit is priced at RM2,700 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM2,756 in East Malaysia.

The front bumper extension gives the SUV a lower and sportier visual stance, almost as if the vehicle has been lowered. The guide lights can also double as daytime running lights. The side skirts continue the same visual theme while still clearing most speed humps without issue. Compared to the front bumper, however, they aren’t quite as aggressive in design. The rear bumper extension follows the same philosophy by visually lowering the rear of the vehicle. Overall, this is a package that will likely appeal to many Malaysians, as body kits remain a popular modification among local car buyers.

Next is the Elevate Package. This includes a new front grille garnish, side mirror covers and a rear mid spoiler positioned between the tail lamps and the base of the tailgate window. It is priced at RM900 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM918 in East Malaysia. The new grille garnish gives the Traz a more premium and distinctive appearance. Personally, I like the little design details Perodua incorporated into the grille, and the same pattern is carried over to the black side mirror covers. It helps create a more cohesive look.

As for the rear spoiler, it’s fairly subtle in the grand scheme of things. To be honest, I don’t think it offers any noticeable aerodynamic benefit, but it’s a tasteful styling addition if you appreciate the finer details. Overall, this package doesn’t give the Traz an overly “boy racer” appearance. Instead, it adds subtle touches that help the car stand out from the sea of Traz models on the road.

You can also upgrade the interior with Nappa leatherette seat covers for RM1,200. Essentially, this transforms the standard cloth seats into leatherette seats that look almost factory-fitted. The seats feature red contrast stitching and inserts, giving the cabin a sportier appearance. Leatherette seats are also easier to keep clean than cloth upholstery. Personally, I still find cloth seats more comfortable in Malaysia’s hot weather. However, if you have young children, the leatherette seats can be a lifesaver whenever drinks or food get spilled. Unlike cloth, leatherette doesn’t absorb liquids, making it much easier to wipe clean without leaving permanent stains.

If you enjoy ambient lighting, Perodua also offers an RGB Lighting Package. It adds illuminated side sill scuff plates and footwell lighting. The package costs RM580 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM589 in East Malaysia. You’ll also need to purchase the wiring kit separately, which costs RM130 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM133 in East Malaysia. Personally, I think this is one of the nicer visual upgrades available. The footwell lighting gives the cabin a more premium atmosphere at night, while the illuminated scuff plates add a pleasant touch every time you open the doors.

There’s also the Utility Package, priced at RM510 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM530 in East Malaysia. It includes door visors, a luggage tray and a floor mat set. I can see this being one of the more popular packages among buyers. While door visors are gradually becoming less fashionable, many owners will appreciate the luggage tray and floor mats. The rubber luggage tray helps prevent items from sliding around in the boot, and when it gets dirty, you can simply remove it and wash it.

As for the floor mats, they’re not technically traditional “coil” mats. Instead, they’re modern all-weather mats similar to those found in many newer vehicles. They trap dirt effectively without holding onto dust the way conventional coil mats do. Cleaning them is simple — just remove them, shake off the dirt or wash them if necessary. These are the kinds of accessories that many new owners would eventually purchase from the aftermarket anyway. Since Perodua offers them directly, buyers can save themselves the hassle of shopping around later while enjoying the reassurance of genuine accessories.

If your phone supports wireless charging, Perodua also offers an integrated 15W wireless charger. It costs RM350 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM365 in East Malaysia. Personally, I find this accessory a little redundant. That’s because the infotainment system doesn’t support wireless Android Auto, meaning I’ll still need to plug my phone in every time I drive. In my case, that makes the wireless charger somewhat pointless. On top of that, wired charging is still noticeably faster than wireless charging.

Finally, there’s the wheel lock nut set, which is made from hardened steel and is designed to help prevent wheel theft. It costs RM200 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM204 in East Malaysia. Technically, you can buy similar wheel locks from most tyre shops. However, purchasing them directly from Perodua offers added convenience. Interestingly, after taking a closer look at the media car I borrowed, it didn’t appear to have the wheel locks fitted. Nevertheless, if you frequently park in areas with higher crime rates, it’s a worthwhile addition for extra peace of mind.

At the end of the day, there are some packages I would personally choose and others I would skip if I were buying a Traz. My picks would be the RGB Lighting Package and the Utility Package. I like the RGB lighting because it’s subtle but still adds a nice ambience during night drives. The Utility Package, meanwhile, is simply practical and offers accessories that you’ll likely end up using every day. That said, knowing Malaysian car buyers, I think many will gravitate towards the exterior styling packages to give their Traz a sportier appearance. Whichever packages you choose, the biggest advantage is that all genuine GearUp accessories are covered under Perodua’s warranty. That alone makes them worth considering over aftermarket alternatives.
