Caltex Malaysia has launched the eleventh edition of its Fuel Your School (FYS) initiative, extending its education-focused community programme to Perak as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting underfunded schools across the country. Building on the success of smart aquaponics projects previously introduced in Johor and Kelantan, the latest expansion aims to combine STEM education with food sustainability while inspiring students to explore innovative learning opportunities.

Organised in collaboration with the MyKasih Foundation and HAVVA Agrotech, and endorsed by the Ministry of Education, the programme continues to provide students with practical exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through the implementation of smart aquaponics systems. These systems not only serve as educational tools but also help schools develop sustainable food production capabilities.

According to Caltex Malaysia Country Chairman, Leong Jee Wong, the decision to bring the programme to Perak reflects the company’s ambition to broaden its positive impact on local communities. He noted that the state is home to many talented young students and expressed hope that the initiative would encourage greater interest in STEM subjects while fostering a culture of sustainability.

As part of the programme, 10 selected schools in Perak will receive specialised smart aquaponics systems. Unlike conventional farming methods, the systems feature automated water circulation technology that creates a self-sustaining ecosystem where fish and plants support one another’s growth. This innovative approach allows students to observe scientific concepts in action while gaining practical agricultural knowledge.

To ensure the long-term success of the initiative, HAVVA Agrotech will conduct food security workshops at each participating school. These sessions will provide teachers and students with the skills needed to manage and maintain the systems effectively. With each harvest cycle taking approximately six weeks, participants will gain first-hand experience cultivating vegetables, herbs, microgreens and fruit-bearing plants while learning about sustainable farming practices relevant to the modern world.

The programme also incorporates a community-driven support model. Each participating school has been paired with a local Caltex service station retail partner, which will provide ongoing support through participation in workshops, school activities and collaborative events. This partnership aims to strengthen ties between schools and local communities while ensuring the continuity of the project.

Since its introduction in 2012, Fuel Your School has positively impacted more than 112,000 individuals throughout Malaysia by improving access to educational resources and supporting STEM-based learning initiatives. The aquaponics component, first introduced in Johor in 2024 and later expanded to Kelantan in 2025, has already demonstrated significant results. Over a two-year period, participating schools collectively harvested approximately 1,235 kilograms of vegetables and 210 kilograms of fish, highlighting the programme’s success in promoting both education and food sustainability.

Teachers involved in the programme have reported noticeable improvements in student engagement. Many observed that students became more inquisitive, actively asking questions and conducting independent research as part of a shift toward student-centred learning. The hands-on nature of the aquaponics system has helped transform traditional classroom experiences into interactive learning environments.

Students have also embraced the opportunity to work with advanced agricultural technology. Many expressed excitement at being able to use systems that combine smart technology with farming practices, describing the experience as something they previously only encountered through online videos or innovation showcases.

As Caltex Malaysia continues to expand Fuel Your School across the nation, the initiative remains focused on creating meaningful, long-term change. By enhancing educational opportunities, promoting sustainability and strengthening community partnerships, the programme is helping to equip the next generation with valuable skills while contributing to more resilient and self-sufficient communities throughout Malaysia.
