Proton has extended its nationwide 10,000 sMILEs Expedition to Sarawak, completing a journey from Miri to Kuching that highlights not only the real-world capability of its vehicles but also the rich culture, landscapes, and communities of East Malaysia. Held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, the fourth round of the expedition offered participants an immersive driving and cultural experience across one of Malaysia’s most diverse states.
The Sarawak leg was officially flagged off at Proton JL Motors Piasau 3S in Miri by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, YB Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, alongside local authorities, tourism agencies, dealer partners, media representatives, content creators, customers, and invited guests. From the outset, the expedition was designed not only as a convoy journey, but as a platform to demonstrate how Proton vehicles perform under genuine everyday driving conditions.
The convoy route covered a wide range of terrain, including the Pan Borneo Highway, intercity routes, rural roads, and more demanding stretches, reflecting the actual driving environment faced by East Malaysians daily. Throughout the journey, three key models were put to the test: the Proton Saga, Proton X50, and Proton S70.
The Proton S70 showcased its long-distance touring strength, with participants experiencing the smooth performance of its 1.5L i-GT turbocharged engine, 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission, refined ride comfort, and intelligent driver assistance systems during extended highway segments.
The Proton X50 highlighted its technology-driven appeal, demonstrating features such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), voice recognition, smart connectivity, and intelligent parking assistance, reinforcing its positioning as a modern urban SUV built for convenience and safety.
Meanwhile, the Proton Saga continued to affirm its long-standing reputation as a dependable and practical sedan, delivering consistent comfort and usability across both city and rural routes—making it a trusted choice for families and everyday mobility.
Together, the trio completed the demanding Sarawak route under authentic driving conditions, offering participants a comprehensive understanding of how Proton vehicles perform beyond controlled showroom environments.
Beyond the driving experience, the expedition also placed strong emphasis on cultural immersion and tourism discovery. In Bintulu, participants visited Taman Tumbina, known for its wildlife conservation efforts, before taking part in a Sarawak Laksa Hunt Challenge that demonstrated how in-car connectivity and navigation features enhance everyday travel experiences.
A key highlight of the journey was the visit to Rumah Panjang Gani in Pakan, where participants were welcomed with traditional Iban hospitality during Gawai celebrations. The experience offered meaningful cultural exchange and deepened appreciation for Sarawak’s living heritage and community spirit.
The convoy also passed through the Batang Lupar Bridge, an important infrastructure landmark symbolising improved regional connectivity, before concluding its journey at the iconic Kuching Cat Statue—one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
East Malaysia continues to play a strategic role in Proton’s national growth, supported by an expanding network of sales and service centres across Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. This ensures customers have convenient access to sales, maintenance, and after-sales support, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to delivering a seamless ownership experience.
From January to May 2026, Proton recorded 12,916 vehicle sales in East Malaysia, with the Proton Saga and Proton X50 emerging as the top-performing models. The brand currently holds an estimated 19% market share in the region, reflecting strong consumer trust and sustained demand for practical, value-driven mobility solutions.
According to Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, the expedition goes beyond showcasing vehicles. “It is about understanding our customers, experiencing the roads they travel every day, and demonstrating how our vehicles perform in real-world conditions,” he said. “At the same time, it allows us to celebrate the culture, hospitality, and communities that make Sarawak unique.”
As Round 4 concludes, the 10,000 sMILEs Expedition will continue with its final activities in Kuching, further strengthening the connection between Proton, local communities, and the spirit of Visit Malaysia 2026.
