Volvo Car Malaysia has introduced the Selamat Calculator, a new interactive initiative aimed at encouraging Malaysians to reflect on the real impact of road safety and the value of simply making it home safely. Developed in collaboration with Mr Money TV, the digital experience forms part of Volvo’s broader Selamat campaign, which seeks to strengthen awareness around responsible driving and personal safety.
While people often calculate the worth of their cars, homes, and investments, the Selamat Calculator shifts attention to a far more personal question — what would be left behind if someone never returned home again. The platform guides users through a series of reflective questions covering areas such as age, income, family responsibilities, career progress, and lifestyle commitments. Based on the responses, participants receive a personalised safety risk profile along with an estimate of the emotional and financial consequences their absence could create for loved ones.
The experience categorises users into four distinct life-stage profiles, including family breadwinners, supportive partners, independent individuals building their future, and professionals who have spent years establishing their success. More than just a self-assessment tool, the calculator is designed to remind users that road safety extends beyond a single moment of negligence — affecting families, dreams, and futures that may never be fulfilled.
According to Patricia Yaw, the initiative is not about assigning a monetary figure to human life, but about encouraging Malaysians to appreciate the importance of their presence in the lives of others.
Yaw explained that while people may occasionally take safety for granted, the true meaning of “Selamat” lies in protecting the relationships, memories, and milestones that matter most. She added that Volvo hopes the initiative will encourage more mindful decisions behind the wheel.
Peter Yong echoed the sentiment, highlighting that financial literacy should also include recognising the importance of staying safe and healthy enough to enjoy life’s rewards. He noted that many people focus heavily on luxury and financial goals while overlooking simple but critical habits such as wearing seatbelts, resting adequately, and driving patiently.
The Selamat Calculator complements several other educational efforts under Volvo Car Malaysia’s ongoing safety advocacy. Among them is the upcoming Selamat Driving Experience scheduled for 16 and 17 May 2026, which aims to further reinforce road safety awareness and responsible driving culture across Malaysia.
For Volvo, the word “Selamat” represents more than a greeting — it symbolises a shared wish for loved ones to travel safely, live fully, and always return home. Through this campaign, the company hopes to make road safety a collective responsibility embraced by all Malaysians.
The Selamat Calculator is now accessible online, inviting the public to reflect on the importance of every journey and the people waiting at the end of it.
