Grab Malaysia has unveiled a new feature called Group Ride, aimed at making daily travel more affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly for Malaysians. The latest addition to the Grab app supports the government’s efforts to encourage ride-sharing and reduce traffic congestion, while giving commuters a practical way to cut transportation costs.

Built around the concept of “Kongsi Perjalanan, Kongsi Tambang”, the feature allows multiple passengers travelling along similar routes to share a single vehicle. By doing so, fewer cars are needed on the road, helping to improve urban mobility while reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

The launch also received support from the Ministry of Transport, with Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook personally testing the feature alongside ministry personnel in Putrajaya.

As cities continue to expand and traffic congestion becomes a growing challenge, the Ministry of Transport has been encouraging solutions that complement public transportation while lowering commuting expenses for the public.

According to Loke Siew Fook, the ministry welcomes initiatives such as Group Ride because they align with the government’s broader #TanggungjawabBersama campaign, which calls for e-hailing operators to expand carpooling services and create more sustainable transport ecosystems.

He noted that recent disruptions in global fuel supply caused by tensions in West Asia have prompted more Malaysians to seek cost-saving transportation alternatives, including public transit and shared mobility options. The minister added that smarter transport planning can also benefit e-hailing drivers by reducing idle time and fuel wastage through better route optimisation.

Grab Malaysia explained that the introduction of Group Ride was inspired by the way passengers already share rides informally, especially among colleagues commuting to work or friends attending the same destination.

Rashid Shukor, Director of Country Operations and Mobility at Grab Malaysia, said the feature was developed to address common pain points while enhancing affordability, flexibility, and convenience for users.

Passengers using Group Ride can enjoy savings of up to 40 percent compared to booking separate rides individually. The feature also includes flexible payment options, allowing the trip host to either pay the full fare or split costs among passengers. Fare splitting can be divided equally or calculated proportionally based on the distance each passenger travels.

One of the standout aspects of Group Ride is its AI-driven routing system. Grab’s algorithms automatically determine the most efficient sequence of pick-ups and drop-offs to minimise travel time for both passengers and driver-partners.

The service supports a variety of trip arrangements, including:

  • Multiple pick-up points leading to one destination
  • A single pick-up location with several drop-off points
  • Mixed route combinations for greater flexibility

Grab is also preparing to introduce a new “Waiting Room” feature, which will allow passengers to coordinate in real time by tracking vehicle arrival progress and monitoring the readiness of fellow riders.

Despite its focus on efficiency and ride-sharing, Grab stressed that safety remains a top priority. Group Ride is fully integrated with the platform’s existing safety ecosystem, including:

  • The in-app Safety Centre
  • Emergency SOS assistance
  • Real-time trip monitoring technology

These measures are intended to ensure that passengers continue to enjoy the same level of protection available across Grab’s other mobility services.

The rollout of Group Ride reflects a broader push toward smarter and more sustainable transportation in Malaysia. By encouraging shared journeys, the feature not only reduces transportation expenses for commuters but also contributes to lower traffic congestion and a smaller environmental footprint.

Group Ride is now gradually being introduced to eligible users nationwide through the Grab mobile app, offering friends, families, and colleagues a more efficient way to travel together.
