Volvo Car Malaysia has unveiled the new Volvo EX30 Cross Country, a ruggedised version of its compact electric SUV designed to combine everyday urban usability with the freedom to venture further off the beaten path. Whether it is navigating the busy streets of Klang Valley during the week or heading towards the highlands and outdoor destinations at the weekend, the EX30 Cross Country aims to offer the best of both worlds without compromising on Volvo’s trademark safety, comfort and Scandinavian design.
The Cross Country name has a long history within Volvo. First introduced in 1997, the concept was developed to cope with the demanding Scandinavian climate and has since evolved through decades of testing across wet roads, rough terrain, highways and muddy tracks. Now, that philosophy has been brought into the electric era.
“Life is full of adventures” is particularly fitting for Malaysia, according to Chris Wailes, Managing Director of Volvo Cars Malaysia and Thailand, who highlighted the country’s unique combination of bustling cities and ancient rainforests. He described the EX30 Cross Country as more than simply a car, but an experience designed to give drivers the freedom to explore while providing confidence wherever the road leads.
At its core, the EX30 Cross Country retains the compact dimensions and city-friendly character of the standard EX30. Its 360-degree environmental awareness, supported by corner radars and multiple sensors, is designed to help drivers manoeuvre through everything from expressways to narrow urban streets. Power comes from a twin-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 428 hp and 543 Nm, giving the compact SUV plenty of punch when the road starts climbing. The result is a claimed 0-100 km/h time of just 3.7 seconds.
Volvo has also fine-tuned the steering software, optimising steering torque build-up, active return and damping to provide greater control through tight corners while maintaining a stronger connection between driver and road. For those venturing away from smooth tarmac, the Cross Country gets 19 mm more ground clearance than the standard EX30. This is paired with an advanced chassis and 19-inch five-spoke wheels designed to better absorb road disturbances and provide additional comfort and stability on rougher surfaces.
Despite its adventurous intentions, range remains a key part of the package. The EX30 Cross Country can travel up to 437 km on the WLTP cycle, while its 69 kWh NMC battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in around 27 minutes using a 175 kW DC rapid charger.
The EX30 Cross Country also carries forward one of the standard EX30’s biggest selling points – its sustainability credentials. As a fully electric, zero-tailpipe-emission SUV, it is designed with a lower carbon footprint, while its cabin incorporates materials such as upcycled denim textiles and bio-attributed Nordico upholstery. Safety remains equally important.
The EX30 Cross Country comes equipped with Volvo’s Safe Space Technology and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features. These include braking and steering support for collision avoidance, a Driver Understanding system, next-generation Pilot Assist and Park Pilot Assist. The idea is simple: whether travelling through traffic or exploring unfamiliar roads, the technology works in the background to help create a safer environment for occupants and those around the vehicle.
The Cross Country treatment also gives the EX30 a tougher visual identity without abandoning its minimalist Scandinavian roots. Matt black and vapour grey elements are combined with low-gloss vapour grey skid plates, matte black lower bumpers and wheel arch extensions. The Cross Country nameplate on the C-pillar, embossed CC logo at the rear and low-gloss rear shield complete the more rugged appearance.
Inside, Volvo has taken inspiration from the deep indigo and blue tones of a starry night, complemented by hints of purple inspired by the final rays of a sunset. Charcoal woven textiles, Nordico upholstery, denim décor panels and blue air-vent panels give the cabin a distinctive character, while the panoramic roof allows occupants to take in the surroundings above.
The EX30 Cross Country also retains the clever storage solutions that helped make the standard EX30 stand out. Instead of conventional door-mounted speakers, the doors feature larger storage compartments, while the sound system is housed in a dashboard-mounted soundbar. There is also flexible central storage between the front seats, while a removable rear box beneath the central armrest provides additional space and can double as a waste bin.
Boot capacity stands at 318 litres with all seats in place, increasing to 718 litres with the second-row split seats folded. That should be enough for luggage, camping equipment and even the occasional flat-pack furniture haul. A “Will it Fit” graphic on the power tailgate provides visual examples of what can be loaded, while a range of optional accessories allows owners to tailor the SUV to their lifestyles. These include mud flaps, load carriers, bicycle racks and a roof basket.
The cabin’s technology package includes a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with built-in Google services, including Google Assistant, Google Maps and access to applications through the Google Play Store. A Harman Kardon Premium Sound system adds a more immersive audio experience, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide additional connectivity options.
The locally assembled Volvo EX30 Cross Country is now available for viewing at authorised Volvo dealers nationwide, with prices starting from RM218,888, excluding insurance. Customers can choose from three exterior colours: Crystal White, Vapour Grey and Cloud Blue. Volvo Car Malaysia is also giving early adopters an extra incentive. The first 100 reservations will receive a launch package worth thousands of ringgit, comprising a RM12,000 cash rebate, a complimentary Volvo Wallbox worth RM3,990, Load Carrier worth RM2,098 and Roof Basket worth RM3,680. That means early buyers can get their new electric adventure machine properly equipped from the start.
Alongside the Cross Country launch, Volvo Car Malaysia has also announced MY27 updates for the EX30 Ultra. The model now starts from RM198,888, excluding insurance, making Volvo’s compact electric SUV more accessible while retaining its blend of electrified performance, practicality and Scandinavian design. Four exterior colours are available: Crystal White, Vapour Grey, Cloud Blue and Onyx Black.
The EX30 Cross Country launch also marks the introduction of Volvo Car Malaysia’s Digital Service Booking (DSB) platform. Available through the Volvo Car Malaysia website and Volvo Cars App, the system allows owners to schedule aftersales appointments digitally, offering greater flexibility and convenience. DSB is currently available at Volvo authorised retailers in the Klang Valley, with plans to expand to other regions across Malaysia.
