Mercedes-Benz is giving Malaysian buyers another route into its latest compact-car generation with the preview of the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 AMG Line, a locally assembled model that combines a petrol engine with electrified technology. Previewed in Singapore ahead of its Malaysian arrival, the CLA 200 AMG Line serves as the internal-combustion-engine (ICE) counterpart to the recently launched all-new electric CLA. The move gives customers greater freedom to choose between powertrains while retaining the new CLA’s technology-focused cabin and distinctive design.
Mercedes-Benz Cars Malaysia says the CLA 200 AMG Line is expected to become the brand’s most efficient ICE vehicle in its segment, with fuel consumption of around five litres per 100 km or below. “The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 AMG Line reflects our commitment to offering customers in Malaysia the freedom to choose the powertrain that best suits their needs,” said Martin Schulz, CEO & President of Mercedes-Benz Cars Malaysia and Head of Region, Mercedes-Benz Cars Southeast Asia.
At first glance, it can be difficult to tell the petrol-powered CLA apart from its electric sibling. The CLA 200 AMG Line gets an AMG Line exterior, 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, MULTIBEAM LED headlights, surround lighting with animated Mercedes-Benz pattern projection and a large panoramic roof. Five exterior colours will be offered: Cosmic Black, Polar White, High-Tech Silver, Sheer Blue and Aqua Mint.
The most obvious visual difference is the front grille. Instead of the electric CLA’s grille treatment, the CLA 200 features a conventional radiator grille with a central Mercedes star and chrome Mercedes-Benz pattern. The grille is framed by an LED light guide, with its edges illuminated when the vehicle’s lights are switched on. Inside, however, the CLA 200 stays remarkably close to its electric counterpart.
The CLA 200 AMG Line is powered by a 1.5-litre engine producing 163 hp and 250 Nm, with a combined system output of 184 hp and 330 Nm. Power is delivered through a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with integrated electric motor, known as the 8G-eDCT. Rather than adding the electric motor as a separate component, Mercedes-Benz has integrated it and its associated components directly into the transmission, helping keep the drivetrain compact and efficient. The system is supported by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of up to 1.3 kWh.
Despite being an ICE model, the CLA 200 can operate on electric power alone in certain situations. At urban speeds and when power demand is below 22 kW, such as during gentle city driving, the car can use electric drive. It can also coast with the drivetrain decoupled at speeds of up to around 100 km/h, allowing the engine and drivetrain to be disengaged when propulsion is not required.
Energy recovery is another important part of the system. Regenerative braking can take place across all eight gears, with the system capable of recovering up to 25 kW of energy. The electric motor also plays a role in starting the combustion engine, eliminating the need for a conventional pinion starter. Mercedes-Benz says transitions between the two power sources, as well as the start-stop function, are designed to be almost imperceptible. The result is a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 8.0 seconds and a top speed of 232 km/h.
The latest CLA is not just about improving efficiency. Mercedes-Benz has also transformed its compact model into a highly connected digital platform. At the heart of the car is the company’s Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which works alongside the fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system.
The system is designed around artificial intelligence, with vehicle software capable of receiving over-the-air updates. Mercedes-Benz says these updates can extend beyond infotainment to include vehicle functions and driving assistance systems, allowing the CLA to gain new functions over its lifetime.
The fourth-generation MBUX system incorporates AI technology from Microsoft and Google through its MBUX Virtual Assistant. Using a multi-agent approach, the system can select the most suitable AI source for a particular task, while maintaining the conversation without requiring occupants to repeatedly provide context.
Navigation also receives a major technology upgrade, with Google Maps forming the foundation of the system. The navigation solution combines route guidance with a 3D representation of the vehicle’s surroundings and the driving-assistance view on the driver’s display. This is designed to give the driver a clearer understanding of what the vehicle detects and how its assistance systems are responding to the surrounding environment.
The CLA’s interior is dominated by the floating MBUX Superscreen, which stretches across the dashboard behind a large glass surface. It combines a 10.25-inch driver display with a 14-inch central touchscreen and a 14-inch front passenger display. The passenger screen provides access to more than 40 apps, video streaming and direct access to Disney+, while high-performance chips and real-time graphics from the Unity Game Engine power the displays.
The cabin itself features an AMG Line Sports Seat Package, ARTICO leather and MICROCUT microfibre upholstery, light carbon-grain aluminium trim and a multifunction sports steering wheel finished in Nappa leather. Individual comfort is also catered for with THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, allowing the driver and front passenger to select their preferred temperatures independently.
The CLA 200 AMG Line also comes with an extensive suite of safety and driver assistance technology. Distance Assist DISTRONIC is included, while additional assistance features are grouped under the MB.DRIVE package. Parking and manoeuvring are further supported by MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360. Together, these systems are intended to make the CLA easier to drive in both everyday traffic and tighter parking environments.
The locally assembled Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 AMG Line is now available for pre-booking in Malaysia at an estimated price starting from RM275,000 for Peninsular Malaysia. Mercedes-Benz is also adding an incentive for early adopters. The first 100 customers who pre-book the all-new CLA will receive passes to the upcoming exclusive Mercedes-AMG F1 Party, subject to terms and conditions.
For buyers looking at ownership through financing, the CLA 200 AMG Line is also offered with Mercedes-Benz’s Agility+ plan, with estimated monthly repayments starting from RM2,888. The package includes a fifth-year extended limited Star Gold warranty and four Compact Service Packages, alongside flexible end-of-term options, lower monthly repayments and a guaranteed future value for the vehicle.
