One year after its introduction in July 2025, the All-New Proton X50 continues to build on the legacy established by the original model, with 32,254 units sold during its first 12 months on the Malaysian market.
When the first-generation X50 arrived in 2020, it quickly became one of the models that reshaped Malaysia’s B-segment SUV landscape. By bringing together striking styling, strong performance, advanced technology and a comprehensive suite of safety features, it raised expectations for what buyers could expect from a compact SUV. Five years later, the segment is considerably more competitive, but the X50 continues to attract buyers in significant numbers.
From Segment Disruptor to Established Favourite
The original X50 played an important role in changing perceptions of compact SUVs in Malaysia. Rather than simply offering an affordable entry point into the SUV market, it demonstrated that buyers could have performance, technology and premium features without moving into a larger vehicle segment.
The arrival of the All-New X50 has continued that formula while introducing further improvements. Its first-year sales figure of 32,254 units demonstrates that the model remains highly relevant despite the growing number of competitors in the segment. Since its introduction in 2020, almost 175,000 X50 units have been sold globally, creating a substantial community of owners along the way.
For many customers, the X50 has become more than just transportation. It has served as a first car for some owners, while others have chosen it as an upgrade for changing lifestyles, growing families and new career opportunities. The model has also developed a strong following online, with owners sharing their experiences and activities across platforms including Facebook and Instagram.
The Numbers Behind the X50’s Success
The 32,254 units sold by the All-New X50 in its first year provide an interesting perspective on its popularity. Placed bumper to bumper, the vehicles would form a line approximately 132 kilometres long—roughly the distance between Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.
Based on an assumed annual mileage of 20,000 kilometres per vehicle, the combined distance travelled by those X50s would exceed 603 million kilometres. That is equivalent to travelling around the Earth more than 15,000 times. While the figures are certainly impressive, they also represent something more meaningful: millions of individual journeys made by Malaysian drivers and families.
Technology Designed Around Malaysian Drivers
Technology has remained a key part of the X50’s identity throughout its lifecycle. The model originally made headlines with Proton’s first three-cylinder turbocharged engine, while the latest generation moved to a four-cylinder powertrain as part of its evolution. The All-New X50 also introduces the localised “Hi PROTON” voice command system, featuring Aisyah, providing drivers with a more natural way of interacting with selected vehicle functions.
For Proton, however, innovation is not simply about adding more features. The company says its approach is focused on making technology more useful, intuitive and relevant to Malaysian drivers. Safety remains equally important. The All-New X50 is equipped with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and carries a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, giving it the safety credentials expected by modern SUV buyers.
A Young and Diverse Ownership Base
The X50’s appeal also extends across a broad range of Malaysian buyers, with the average owner of the All-New model being just 36 years old. Colour choices offer another interesting glimpse into buyer preferences. Snow White remains the most popular option, accounting for 31% of sales. It is followed by Teal Bayou Green at 24%, while Armour Silver makes up another 18%. The popularity of Teal Bayou Green in particular suggests that buyers are increasingly willing to move beyond traditional neutral colours when choosing their vehicles.
The X50 Still Has Plenty to Prove
The Malaysian SUV market has changed considerably since the original X50 arrived in 2020. Buyers today have more choices than ever, with established manufacturers and newer players competing aggressively in the B-segment. Yet, the X50 has managed to retain its appeal by evolving alongside the market.
Its combination of performance, technology, safety and everyday practicality continues to resonate with Malaysian buyers, while its established owner community has given the model an identity that goes beyond its specifications. After one year, the All-New Proton X50 has already accumulated more than 32,000 sales in Malaysia. If its predecessor’s journey is anything to go by, the latest generation could have many more milestones ahead.
For now, the numbers suggest that the X50 remains firmly established as one of Malaysia’s most significant B-segment SUVs—and the so-called “King of SUVs” is showing little sign of surrendering its crown.
