GoCar Mobility is stepping in to support Malaysian motorists following SOCAR’s decision to end its car-sharing operations in the country on 31 August 2026, offering eligible SOCAR users up to RM200 in promotional value when they switch to GoCar. The initiative is designed to give former SOCAR users continued access to cars without the need to commit to vehicle ownership. The promotional value can be used for GoCar Share bookings, with up to RM20 redeemable per booking and a maximum benefit of RM200 across multiple bookings.

“We understand that many SOCAR users will still need access to a car, whether for daily errands, work, family trips or occasional journeys. Our aim is simply to make that transition easier,” said Wong Hoe Mun, CEO of GoCar Mobility. “We welcome SOCAR users to GoCar and hope the offer allows them to experience our service and find a mobility option that works for them.”

GoCar currently provides car-sharing services across the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Bahru, serving more than 40,000 users annually. Through the GoCar mobile application, customers can browse available vehicles, make bookings and collect their selected cars from designated locations. Depending on availability and booking requirements, the platform offers access to a range of vehicles, including compact cars, sedans, SUVs, MPVs and electric vehicles.

The service is aimed at a variety of everyday mobility needs, from running errands and attending business appointments to airport transfers, family outings and weekend trips. GoCar believes the car-sharing model remains relevant in Malaysia as motorists increasingly look for flexible alternatives to traditional vehicle ownership.

“We believe there continues to be a place for car sharing in Malaysia. Not everyone needs a car every day, and for some people, access can make more sense than ownership,” Wong added. The company says it remains focused on improving vehicle availability, expanding its locations and increasing the variety of vehicles available through its platform.

Beyond its own car-sharing fleet, GoCar also operates GoCar P2P, a peer-to-peer platform that allows vehicle owners to list their cars for rental. The model provides vehicle owners with an opportunity to generate additional income from cars that may otherwise spend much of their time unused. At the same time, GoCar customers gain access to a wider selection of vehicles and locations.

By combining its dedicated fleet with the P2P marketplace, GoCar aims to provide customers with more mobility options through a single platform while helping vehicle owners make better use of their cars.

GoCar’s latest initiative comes at a time of transition for Malaysia’s car-sharing industry, following SOCAR’s decision to discontinue its local operations. The company acknowledged SOCAR’s contribution to the development of car sharing in Malaysia over the past eight years, particularly in helping introduce consumers to the concept of accessing a vehicle when required instead of owning one outright.

“SOCAR has contributed to building awareness of car sharing in Malaysia, and we respect the role it has played in developing the category,” said Wong. “For us, the priority now is to ensure that people who have become accustomed to accessing cars through car sharing still have options available to them.” GoCar says it will continue working on its service, vehicle availability and locations to make accessing a car more practical for customers who do not require a vehicle on a full-time basis.

Eligible SOCAR users can register for GoCar’s promotional offer between 19 August and 30 September 2026. To claim the offer, users must submit a screenshot of their existing SOCAR wallet for verification via marketing@gocar.my. The promotional value can be used for qualifying GoCar bookings made by 31 December 2026, with the offer subject to the applicable full terms and conditions.
