The battle for honours in the Toyota Vios Gold Championship is set to intensify this weekend as Round 3 of the season heads to the full-length Petronas Sepang International Circuit. With double championship points on offer, drivers across all classes face a pivotal race weekend that could make or break their title ambitions.

Unlike the opening two rounds, which were contested on the shorter circuit configuration, competitors will tackle the full 5.543-kilometre Sepang layout. Adding to the challenge is a demanding one-hour race format scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, testing not only outright speed but also tyre management, race strategy, driver fitness and adaptability to changing weather conditions.

Three graduates of the Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia Young Talent Development Programme have emerged as leading contenders in the premier Super Sporting Class.

Leading the standings is Laser Motor Racing’s Nabil Azlan with 58 points. The former Rookie champion and Sporting Class title winner has enjoyed a consistent start to the season, collecting three second-place finishes and one third-place result across the first two rounds. With his sights firmly set on securing his first Super Sporting Class crown, Nabil acknowledges that the longer race distance will reward drivers who can maintain consistency over the entire event.

His closest challenger is teammate Ady Rahimy, who trails by just nine points. Ady’s strategic approach has paid dividends so far, earning him a race victory and two podium finishes. By carefully managing results in previous rounds, he avoided carrying excessive success ballast into the double-points weekend, potentially giving him an advantage when every championship point becomes crucial.

Defending champion Freddie Ang remains firmly in contention despite sitting third with 32 points. Known throughout the paddock for his remarkable consistency, Ang has built a reputation as one of the championship’s most dependable performers. His impressive record over the past several seasons demonstrates his ability to remain competitive regardless of the circumstances, making him a serious threat as the season approaches its climax.

The Sporting Class championship continues to be one of the most closely contested categories this season.

Justin Toh of BAE Racing by ES Yang currently leads the standings with 49 points, but the margin at the top is razor-thin. Former Toyota GAZOO Racing Rookie Elson Lew sits just three points behind on 46 points, while G-Mart Best Autosport driver Adam Mikail remains within striking distance on 44 points.

All three drivers have shown strong pace throughout the season, and with double points available, the championship order could change dramatically by the end of the weekend. The close competition reflects the growing depth of talent within the series and promises intense racing from start to finish.

The Rookie Class continues to highlight the next generation of Malaysian racing talent.

Seventeen-year-old simulator racer and saloon car competitor Imran Iskandar arrives at Sepang as the championship leader with 63 points. However, his advantage is far from comfortable, as Ervin Lim trails by only two points.

Imran has enjoyed a strong campaign so far, recording one victory, two second-place finishes and a third-place result. Despite leading the standings, he remains focused on taking the season one race at a time, acknowledging the competitiveness of the current Rookie field.

Ervin has proven equally capable, matching his rival with a victory and several podium finishes of his own. Meanwhile, simulator racer and track-day enthusiast Ngo Yong Jian holds third place in the standings and remains mathematically in the title hunt heading into the crucial round.

Now in its ninth season, the Toyota Vios Gold Championship continues to strengthen its reputation as Malaysia’s premier one-make production-based saloon car racing series. Since its inception in 2017, the championship has served as an important platform for developing local motorsport talent while delivering close and competitive racing.

With a total prize pool of RM876,000 spread across four rounds, the series remains one of the most rewarding and competitive motorsport programmes in the country. As drivers prepare for the double-points showdown at Sepang, every lap, every position and every strategic decision will carry added significance in determining who emerges as champion when the season concludes.
