Two standout competitors have emerged victorious from one of the region’s toughest off-road challenges, earning their place on the global stage. Charles Murray of New Zealand and Ron Ng from Singapore have been crowned Asia-Pacific winners of the Defender Trophy after a grueling two-day qualification event in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Competing against 24 participants from across the region—including Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam—the duo distinguished themselves through a combination of skill, resilience, and teamwork. Their victory secures them a spot in the upcoming global final in Africa, where they will face top contenders from around the world in a high-stakes adventure challenge. The global event will be held in collaboration with Tusk, a long-time conservation partner.

Set against the rugged mountain landscapes of southern Taiwan, the Asia-Pacific qualifiers pushed participants to their limits. The competition blended technical driving challenges with physically demanding tasks and strategic problem-solving exercises.

Drivers navigated obstacle-laden courses requiring precision and control, while off-vehicle challenges tested their ability to transport heavy equipment and construct functional solutions under pressure. Physical endurance was equally critical, with activities such as weighted carries and resistance-based exercises adding intensity.

Participants also faced complex scenarios including rope bridge construction, night driving missions, and traversing steep, unpredictable terrain. Success demanded not only advanced driving ability but also clear communication and adaptability—qualities that Murray and Ng consistently demonstrated throughout the competition.

According to Garth Turnbull, the competition reflects more than technical excellence. It highlights resilience, collaboration, and a deep respect for the natural environment. He praised the winners for exemplifying these values and expressed confidence in their performance at the global finals.

The Asia-Pacific leg is part of a broader revival of global challenge events by Jaguar Land Rover, designed to test human capability while leaving a positive impact on local communities and ecosystems. The next stage of the competition will take place in British Columbia, where North American finalists will be determined.

At the heart of the competition is the Defender 110 Trophy Edition, an expedition-ready vehicle that pays tribute to the legacy of the iconic Camel Trophy. Finished in a distinctive Deep Sandglow Yellow, the model celebrates 45 years of heritage while embracing modern exploration.

The adventure continues with the updated Land Rover Defender range, which introduces a suite of enhancements across its 90, 110, and 130 variants. These include refreshed exterior styling, new colour options, and upgraded wheel designs, alongside a larger 13.1-inch infotainment display for improved usability.

Advanced technologies such as Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control further enhance capability, enabling drivers to tackle challenging terrain with greater confidence and precision. Together, these updates reinforce Defender’s reputation as a vehicle built for both heritage and innovation.

As excitement builds around the global competition, Malaysian enthusiasts have something to look forward to as well. The new Defender facelift—often referred to as the Defender FL—is now open for booking through Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia.

The updated model features enhanced interior refinement, including the larger touchscreen and new design finishes, alongside exterior upgrades such as fresh paint options like Woolstone Green and Borasco Grey. Improved driver assistance systems, including a driver attention monitor, further elevate safety and convenience.

While the model has yet to officially launch in Malaysia, early bookings are now available for those eager to be among the first to experience the latest evolution of this iconic off-roader.
