Another year, another update for the Golf GTI. For 2024, Volkswagen Malaysia introduced yet another update for the Golf GTI, adding two more features to this already enjoyable hatchback. I’ve always enjoyed driving the GTI ever since I first drove it. The Golf GTI left a good impression after the last two times I’ve driven it. So with this latest update, I intend to find out if it has made this vehicle even nicer to drive.
Just as mentioned in the introduction, Volkswagen Malaysia added two new features to the Golf GTI. The first new feature is the heads-up display, which provides the driver with necessary driving information directly in the driver’s line of sight. In regular mode, you will only see the vehicle’s speed. But if you switch on the ACC, it will show you the surroundings of the vehicle, giving the driver better spatial awareness. I was hoping to find a tachometer on the heads-up display, as the Golf GTI is a performance hatchback, but alas, that was left out.
And for the second update, that would be the 10-speaker 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system. This system really enhances the in-car entertainment experience of the Golf GTI. This sound system was previously reserved for the Golf R, but I’m quite happy that Volkswagen has brought it down to the GTI, making the car even more appealing. While it may not be the best sound system on the market, this is definitely a huge upgrade over the pre-facelift vehicle.
Continuing to be powered by the 2.0L turbocharged EA888 engine, this engine has the ability to produce around 245hp and 370 Nm of torque. Paired with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, it makes the Golf GTI a great car to drive around, whether daily or spiritedly. This engine has just the right amount of power, and it’s pretty eager to rev up when needed. Additionally, the exhaust does produce pops and bangs when you go into sports mode. This powertrain ticks all the right boxes for a performance vehicle. Apart from providing good power, this engine also offers good fuel economy if you’re not pushing it.
As for handling, the Golf handles like a charm. You get a sharp and quick steering wheel, which helps the hatchback corner confidently. Together with the adaptive suspension, the Golf GTI can tackle any corners, be it on the track or on twisty mountain roads. Apart from providing good body control, this suspension system can also soften up when you need it to. This provides a less intense ride when you just want to potter around town. From the factory, the Golf GTI is already a capable vehicle for those who want to experience good handling.
With all these added features, the Golf GTI also gets a slight bump in price. It is now priced at RM 252,990. At this price point, of course, there are many other different kinds of vehicles you can purchase. But then again, even with this price increase, I still really like the Golf GTI for what it is. With this latest update, it just elevated the driving experience of the vehicle.
