Last year, McLaren unveiled the high performance version of the McLaren 720s in coupe form, called the 765LT coupe. Recently, McLaren Automotive unveiled the spider version of the 765LT, also known as McLaren 765LT Spider.

The new 765LT Spider will share the core attributes of the McLaren Longtail design, which are minimized weight, track-focused dynamics and optimized aerodynamics. Same as the 765LT coupe, only 765 units of the 765LT Spider being produce globally.

Sharing the same basic carbon tub, the 765LT Spider only weights 49kg more compares to the coupe, where the majority of the weight comes from the retractable hard top and accompanying operating mechanism. Overall, the 765LT Spider weighs in around 1,388kg, which is still 80kg lighter than the 720s Spider.

The main highlight of the 765LT Spider is the one-piece carbon fibre Retractable Hard Top (RHT), which has the ability to open or close in just 11 seconds. This operation can be done at speeds up to 50 km/h. With the top down, it will also further enhanced the exhaust note coming out from the quad-exit titanium exhaust system.

Coming back to the chassis, the carbon fibre MonoCage II-S that was used on the 765LT Spider was developed alongside the MonoCage II that was used on the 765LT Coupe. Being developed side by side, the MonoCage II-S are able to retain its chassis rigidity without adding additional bracing, which is another weight-optimizing factor. At the rear of the car, carbon fibre structural supports are fully bonded into the chassis to provide rollover protection.

Inside the Retractable Hard Top panel, there is a carbon fibre frame that has the ability to help create a full carbon fibre shell when closed. This enhanced the comfort level by improving the headroom for the occupants, while extending the length of the roof panel that allows the tops of the A-pillars to move forward, that also helps out on the ingress and egress.

Being a LT model, McLaren also expect their customers to bring the cars to track days, the 765LT Spider will get the same highly evolved aerodynamic package as the coupe. But then, the active rear wing has been recalibrated to reflect whether the roof is up or down and a recalibration of the dampers to account for the minor increase in weight, while still able to produce 25% more downforce than a 720s Spider.

In terms of powertrain, the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine has the ability to produce 755bhp and 800Nm of torque. The gear ratio in the transmission have been revised for even greater in-gear acceleration, helping the 765LT Spider to achieve the faster lap times. 0 – 100km/h is done in 2.7 seconds, with 0 – 200km/h taking 7.2 seconds.
