BYD Malaysia and Gentari are exploring the deployment of BYD Flash Charging infrastructure in Malaysia following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at BYD’s global headquarters in Shenzhen, China. The proposed collaboration will examine potential charging locations and supporting infrastructure as Malaysia continues to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network.

Gentari, a clean energy solutions company wholly owned by PETRONAS, will work with BYD Malaysia to assess opportunities for introducing the high-power charging technology locally. The plans include selected DENZA showrooms, PETRONAS stations and intercity routes connecting major population centres, with highway rest and service areas also being considered as the network develops.

BYD Flash Charging is designed to deliver its highest charging speeds when paired with vehicles equipped with the company’s Second Generation Blade Battery. One of the first models in Malaysia to support the technology is the DENZA Z9GT, which features a 122.49 kWh battery and a 1,000-volt electrical architecture.

According to BYD, the Z9GT can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes under the system’s specified conditions. Actual charging performance will depend on factors including the vehicle, battery temperature and operating conditions. While the proposed infrastructure is intended to support compatible vehicles, existing BYD models can also use the chargers. However, their charging speeds will be limited by each model’s capabilities.

BYD Malaysia Managing Director Jacob Ma said the company was working towards introducing Flash Charging in Malaysia, with the aim of making high-power charging more accessible to customers. He added that the collaboration would also look at developing local capabilities, including training and upskilling technicians to support the country’s growing EV ecosystem.

The initial deployment is expected to focus on selected DENZA luxury showrooms, giving owners of compatible vehicles access to the technology. Beyond this first phase, BYD Malaysia and Gentari will explore additional locations and the infrastructure required to support wider deployment. The MoU represents an initial step towards a potential rollout, with the final network coverage and implementation plans still to be established.

Alongside the charging infrastructure announcement, DENZA Malaysia has introduced Fjord Green as a new exterior colour option for the Z9GT. The addition joins the existing Rime Gold and Obsidian Black choices and is now available for viewing at DENZA showrooms nationwide. DENZA Malaysia said more than 100 units of the Z9GT had been delivered to customers locally since its launch, with additional batches arriving to meet demand.

Priced at RM358,800, the Z9GT is positioned as a luxury grand tourer built on BYD’s e3 Platform. It produces a claimed 850 kW (1,156 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. Other features include Compass Turn and Crab Walk, which are designed to improve manoeuvrability in specific driving situations. The model is also compatible with BYD Flash Charging, although the availability of the technology in Malaysia will depend on the development and deployment of the proposed charging network.

Interior combinations vary according to the selected exterior finish. Rime Gold can be paired with a Perg Beige interior or an all-Black cabin featuring suede seats with yellow stitching. Obsidian Black is available with Red Velvet, Perg Beige or the all-Black suede interior with yellow stitching. The new Fjord Green exterior offers all three interior configurations: Perg Beige, Red Velvet, or the all-Black interior with suede seats and yellow stitching.

The DENZA Z9GT is available at eight locations in Malaysia: DENZA Balakong, DENZA Glenmarie, DENZA KLCC, DENZA KL North, DENZA Old Klang Road, DENZA Melaka, DENZA Penang and DENZA Skudai.
