Volvo Car Malaysia has enjoyed a night to remember at the 2026 Malaysia Effie Awards, becoming the first automotive brand in the history of the awards to secure the prestigious Grand Effie, Brand of the Year and an exclusive Gold Effie in the same edition. The remarkable clean sweep places Volvo Car Malaysia at the forefront of marketing effectiveness in Malaysia, with its success recognising not only creative ambition but also the campaign’s ability to create a genuine connection with consumers and deliver tangible impact.
The brand’s haul included the Grand Effie for “Selamat is Volvo”, the Brand of the Year title, a Gold Effie for “David vs. Goliath” in the Situational category, as well as a Bronze Effie in Automotive – Vehicles. Volvo also finished as a Finalist in the Multicultural – Products category. The achievement comes at an especially significant time for Volvo Car Malaysia, following the recent launch of its evolved flagship family SUV, the Volvo EX90.
At the heart of Volvo’s historic Effie success is the “Selamat” campaign, an idea that turned one of Malaysia’s most familiar words into a powerful statement about road safety. Rather than introducing another fictional automotive challenger into an already crowded market, Volvo created the appearance of an entirely new car brand called “Selamat”. The mysterious newcomer was teased through a specially camouflaged fleet, cryptic digital outdoor advertising and social media activity, sparking curiosity and speculation among Malaysians.
The eventual reveal delivered the twist: “Selamat” was Volvo all along. The idea drew on the word’s unique place in Malaysian culture. “Selamat” is used countless times in everyday expressions such as Selamat Pagi and Selamat Jalan, while its literal meaning is closely tied to safety and well-being.
Volvo used that cultural connection to reinforce a message it has been associated with for decades — that safety should not simply be another specification on a vehicle’s equipment list. “Selamat” was therefore more than a campaign. It became a reminder that safety matters most when something goes wrong.
According to Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, the campaign was designed to make safety something Malaysians could genuinely feel rather than simply hear about. The approach clearly resonated, with the campaign achieving a 90.8% measurable response, strengthening the association between Volvo and the idea of safety among Malaysians. The campaign also sought to shift the conversation around road safety from something viewed primarily as a regulatory responsibility into a shared cultural value.
Making the idea work required more than an advertising campaign. Volvo and its agency partners built a multi-platform experience designed to make Malaysians curious, engage with the mystery and eventually connect “Selamat” with Volvo. The campaign was brought to life through the combined efforts of Invictus Blue, Grey Malaysia, Dox Digital, LAB Activations, Directors Think Tank and Live Experience.
Grey Malaysia’s Chief Creative Officer, Graham Drew, explained that the creative ambition was to make the two ideas — “Selamat” and Volvo — feel inseparable. That meant taking a word Malaysians already instinctively understood and connecting it with Volvo’s long-established reputation for safety, creating a message that was both familiar and unexpected.
Invictus Blue Group CEO Jo Yau highlighted the role of media, creators and influencers in transforming that creative idea into a wider conversation. Instead of immediately revealing the brand behind “Selamat”, the campaign allowed audiences to discover the story themselves, encouraging speculation and organic discussion before ultimately connecting the dots back to Volvo. The campaign also moved beyond screens.
LAB Activations brought the concept into the physical world through the camouflaged fleet, the Selamat Drive experience at Sepang and the visually striking Selamat Crash Car. These experiences were designed to demonstrate that vehicle safety is not merely an abstract concept or technical specification — it is something that can be experienced first-hand. Meanwhile, Dox Digital focused on creating genuine online intrigue and community discussion, helping the campaign evolve from a product message into a broader cultural conversation.
Winning the Grand Effie could mark the beginning of an even bigger journey for “Selamat”. With its unprecedented success at the Malaysia Effie Awards, the campaign could now have an opportunity to reach the global stage, potentially introducing Volvo’s distinctly Malaysian interpretation of safety and protection to international audiences.
For Volvo Car Malaysia, however, “Selamat” is set to be more than an award-winning campaign. The brand plans to continue developing the platform through educational initiatives, immersive experiences and purpose-led activities focused on safer mobility and community well-being. After 99 years of building its reputation around automotive safety, Volvo has found a distinctly Malaysian way to tell that story — by taking a word Malaysians say every day and turning it into a reminder of what matters most.
