Proton has marked a major milestone in 2026, recording the highest monthly domestic sales volume in the company’s history in August as strong demand across its internal combustion engine (ICE), electric vehicle and export businesses drove Group sales to 22,632 units. The August figure represents Proton’s strongest overall monthly performance since January 2010 and was 22.7% higher than the 18,450 units recorded in July. With the latest results, Proton’s cumulative Group sales for the first eight months of 2026 reached 141,421 units, representing a substantial 40.2% year-on-year increase.

Based on the forecast Total Industry Volume (TIV), Proton is expected to command a 27.9% market share for August, lifting its year-to-date market share to 25.6%. The company’s conventional vehicle range continued to provide a strong foundation for the record-breaking month, with the Saga, X50, X90 and S70 all contributing solid results.

The Proton S70 was one of the standout performers, recording its highest-ever monthly sales volume in August. A total of 3,235 units were delivered to Malaysian customers, pushing its year-to-date tally to 17,953 units. Following the introduction of the updated 2026 model in February, demand for the C-segment sedan has strengthened considerably, allowing its 2026 sales to surpass its entire 2025 volume with four months still remaining in the year.

Proton’s SUV line-up also maintained its strong position in the market. The X50 continued to lead the B-segment SUV category in year-to-date sales while retaining its position as Malaysia’s best-selling SUV, with 2,274 units delivered in August. Meanwhile, the larger X90 continued to lead the seven-seat D-segment SUV category. August deliveries stood at 471 units, bringing its 2026 performance to an impressive 64% ahead of the corresponding period in 2025.

The Proton Saga remained another key contributor, with 7,347 units sold in August. Its year-to-date volume is now approaching the 60,000-unit mark and stands 33.3% ahead of last year’s performance. At its current pace, the Saga is on course to exceed 80,000 units in annual sales.

The company’s electrification business delivered another record month as well. Proton e.MAS achieved 6,047 deliveries in August, surpassing the previous record set just one month earlier in July. Its cumulative sales for the first eight months of the year have now reached 27,860 units, with all three models leading their respective segments.

The e.MAS 5 was the biggest contributor, with 4,818 units delivered during the month. Already Malaysia’s best-selling EV, the model established a new national record for the highest monthly sales volume achieved by a single electric vehicle. The C-segment e.MAS 7 recorded 613 units in August, while the e.MAS 7 PHEV registered 616 units. The latter is also beginning to benefit from increased locally assembled production following the line-off ceremony held at Proton’s Tanjong Malim facility in July.

Beyond the domestic market, Proton’s export operations are becoming an increasingly important contributor to overall growth. Export sales for August totalled 2,477 units, covering both Proton and Geely models assembled in Malaysia. This marked the company’s highest monthly export volume since January 2011. The strong August performance lifted Proton’s year-to-date export volume to 6,059 units, meaning the company has already exceeded the 6,000 vehicles exported throughout the whole of 2025 after just eight months of 2026.

The increase reflects Proton’s expanding role as a manufacturing and export hub for Geely models. Investments in new facilities at its Tanjong Malim plant, including the powertrain plant, new stamping facilities and Malaysia’s first dedicated xEV assembly plant, have enabled Proton to assemble multiple Geely models for overseas markets alongside vehicles for the domestic market. This strategy not only increases utilisation of Proton’s production capacity, but also raises purchasing volumes from local vendors while supporting Malaysia’s automotive manufacturing ecosystem and balance of trade.

Commenting on the August achievement, Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa said the record demonstrated the confidence customers have placed in the company’s products and services. He also highlighted the simultaneous growth of Proton’s export operations and e.MAS business, noting that the company is now well positioned to meet its volume and financial objectives for the year.
