As Malaysia marks its 69th Hari Kebangsaan, Grab Malaysia is celebrating the women within its ecosystem whose everyday efforts help keep communities moving while supporting their families, contributing to society and building their own livelihoods. This year’s Hari Kebangsaan celebrations saw Grab bring together a predominantly women-led contingent across Putrajaya, Pahang, Penang, Sabah, Johor and Melaka.

The participants included driver- and delivery-partners, persons with disabilities (PWD) partners and Grab personnel, highlighting the diverse ways women are contributing to Malaysia’s workforce and the wider gig economy. A total of 100 women partners from the six states took part in the celebrations under Grab’s #WirawatiNegaraku initiative, placing their stories and contributions at the centre of the company’s National Day activities.

“Every Hari Kebangsaan we celebrate the people who make Malaysia what it is. This year, we are proud to put our #WirawatiNegaraku at the heart of our celebrations, the women across our Grab ecosystem who work hard for their families, contribute to their communities and build a better future for themselves and those around them,” said Adelene Foo, Managing Director of Grab Malaysia. “Their stories remind us that nation-building is not only about the big moments, but also the everyday choices, sacrifices and contributions that keep Malaysia moving.”

For many of Grab’s women partners, the flexibility offered by platform-based earning provides an opportunity to contribute financially to their households while balancing personal responsibilities. For PWD partners in particular, accessible earning opportunities can offer greater flexibility to participate in the workforce and build independence. One such partner is Syuhainie Shaharuddin, a PWD delivery-partner who took part in Grab Malaysia’s women-led contingent during the Hari Kebangsaan celebrations in Putrajaya.

“Earning with Grab has given me more than financial independence. It has given me the confidence to support myself and the freedom to become an entrepreneur,” said Syuhainie. “We are capable of delivering great service and fulfilling our responsibilities just like anyone else. Being part of Grab’s women-led contingent so far has strengthened my patriotic spirit and belief in myself.”

Beyond flexible earning opportunities, Grab said it continues to support women on its platform through safety features and community initiatives such as #SisBoleh, aimed at encouraging greater participation and independence among women partners. Safety remains another important consideration, particularly for women who spend significant amounts of time on the road.

“At Grab, safety means knowing that you have support when you need it, whether you are heading home after dark or earning on the road,” said Naomi Say, Head of Regional Platform Safety at Grab. “Our safety innovations are more than a feature; it gives women the confidence and peace of mind to move, work and pursue their goals on their own terms.”

Say added that Grab continues to examine how it can better support women before, during and after every journey, with the #WirawatiNegaraku contingent reflecting that broader commitment. The Putrajaya celebrations provided a particularly strong showcase of the diversity within Grab’s ecosystem. Together with ecosystem partners GXBank and Jaya Grocer, Grab brought together close to 50 marchers, including women PWD partners, 10 electric delivery bikes ridden by women delivery-partners and four Grab electric vehicles.

The contingent offered a visible representation of the different roles women play across the platform, from delivering food and goods to supporting their families and participating in the broader workforce. With women represented across National Day celebrations in six states, Grab Malaysia’s #WirawatiNegaraku initiative served as a reminder that nation-building can take many forms.

For these women, it is reflected in the everyday work of earning a living, supporting loved ones, serving their communities and creating greater opportunities for themselves. As Malaysia celebrates another year of independence, their contributions demonstrate that keeping the nation moving is not limited to the grand occasions, but also happens through the everyday efforts of Malaysians across the country.
