Proton has continued its environmental sustainability journey with the successful organisation of its third annual beach cleanup programme, reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.
Held at Pantai Cermin in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, the Proton Beach Cleaning 3.0 initiative gathered 82 volunteers, including Proton employees and students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). Together, participants worked to remove litter and debris that had accumulated along the coastline, helping to protect the surrounding environment and improve the condition of one of the area’s popular recreational beaches.
Now in its third consecutive year, the programme reflects Proton’s ongoing efforts to integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices into its operations. Beyond contributing to environmental preservation, the initiative aims to cultivate greater awareness of sustainability issues among employees and the wider community.
A notable addition to this year’s programme was the involvement of UPSI students. The collaboration provided participants with practical experience in environmental conservation while complementing their academic learning. Through direct participation, students were able to gain a deeper understanding of sustainability challenges and the importance of individual action in protecting natural ecosystems.
Muhammad Norhysyam bin Umar of UPSI highlighted the educational value of the initiative, noting that programmes such as the beach cleanup offer meaningful exposure to real-world conservation efforts. He added that the experience encouraged students to become advocates for environmental responsibility within their communities and future workplaces.
The collective effort yielded significant results, with volunteers removing approximately 536 kilograms of waste from Pantai Cermin. The cleanup contributed to preserving the local marine ecosystem while enhancing the cleanliness and appeal of a beach frequented by both domestic and international visitors.
According to Salawati Mohd Yusoff, Director of Group Communications at Proton, sustainability requires continuous commitment and cooperation among various stakeholders. She emphasised that initiatives such as Proton Beach Cleaning 3.0 demonstrate how collaborative efforts can translate sustainability goals into practical action, creating long-term benefits for both the environment and society.
Through programmes like this, Proton continues to strengthen its role in environmental stewardship while encouraging greater participation in sustainability initiatives beyond the automotive industry.
