The second round of the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Vios Challenge Season 9 delivered another thrilling chapter in Malaysian motorsport, as drivers battled scorching temperatures, fierce competition, and dramatic on-track incidents at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit South Track.
The two-day event attracted 37 competitors across the Super Sporting, Sporting, and Rookie classes, while an additional 14 cars contested the Classic Challenge. Fans were treated to close racing throughout the weekend, with the action reaching more than 618,000 viewers through live streaming platforms.
The premier Super Sporting category showcased the skill and determination of the championship’s elite drivers. Former champion Mitchell Cheah produced an impressive comeback drive in Race 1, climbing from seventh on the starting grid to secure victory after overtaking pole-sitter Nabil Azlan in the closing laps. Bradley Benedict Anthony completed the podium in third place.
Cheah’s triumph marked a welcome return to the top step of the podium and provided a significant boost to his championship campaign.
Race 2 produced a different outcome as Toyotsu Racing’s William Ho emerged victorious after a captivating battle at the front. Starting from pole position, Tom Goh initially controlled the race before a mistake opened the door for Bradley Benedict Anthony and subsequently Ho, who seized the lead and never looked back. Nabil Azlan continued his strong weekend with another podium finish in second place, while teammate Ady Rahimy claimed third.
Defending champion Freddie Ang endured a challenging weekend after receiving a penalty in Race 1 and finishing outside the podium positions in Race 2.
The Sporting Class highlighted the growing international appeal of the Vios Challenge. Thailand’s Varunchit Wattanathanakun delivered a commanding performance in Race 1, taking the lead early and steadily extending his advantage to secure a convincing victory.
Behind him, Elson Lew successfully defended second place despite sustained pressure from rival drivers, while India’s Aditya Patnaik completed the podium after capitalising on a late retirement ahead.
Sunday’s Race 2 belonged to Adam Mikail of G-Mart Best Autosport, who drove confidently to victory. Justin Toh finished second, with Taj Aiman securing third place after another competitive contest.
The Rookie Class once again demonstrated the effectiveness of Toyota’s young driver development programme, with emerging talents producing exciting battles throughout the weekend.
Imran Iskandar claimed his maiden victory of the season in Race 1 after previously recording two runner-up finishes in the opening round. The 17-year-old converted pole position into a dominant win, while 16-year-old Ethen Low impressed on his championship debut by finishing second. Simulator racer Ngo Yong Jian rounded out the podium.
Race 2 saw Low turn the tables by capturing his first victory in only his second Vios Challenge race. The young driver’s victory completed an outstanding debut weekend that included two podium finishes. Ervin Lim crossed the line in second place, while Imran Iskandar secured another podium with third.
The Rookie Class continues to serve as a key stepping stone for graduates of the Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia Young Talent Development Programme, which is now in its sixth year of nurturing future motorsport stars.
The Classic Challenge delivered some of the most memorable moments of the weekend, particularly during Race 1 where the safety car was deployed twice following separate incidents.
Early in the race, Harkiesh Geeva’s car flipped into the gravel trap after contact from behind, bringing out the safety car. Although the driver escaped injury, the damage ruled the car out of the remainder of the weekend.
A second safety car intervention followed later after another competitor collided with the concrete barrier on the main straight.
When the dust settled, the pairing of Loke Yin Yi and Kenny Lee secured victory for Kegani Racing Academy through a well-executed strategy and strong pace. Brendan Paul and Bradley Benedict Anthony finished second, while Thailand’s Mekkaradkeeta Kalantananda and Varunchit Wattanathanakun claimed third.
Race 2 featured another dramatic twist as Mohamad Anaqi and Mohamad Hariry built a sizeable lead before a late safety car period erased their advantage. At the restart, brothers Bradley Benedict and Brendan Paul Anthony seized control and held off intense pressure to claim victory. Kenny Lee and Loke Yin Yi finished second, while the Thai duo of Kalantananda and Wattanathanakun secured their second consecutive third-place finish.
Now in its ninth season, the Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Challenge remains the longest-running manufacturer-organised production-based saloon car racing series in Malaysia. With a total prize pool of RM876,000 spread across four rounds, the championship continues to attract experienced racers, aspiring young talents, and international competitors.
As the season approaches its halfway stage, the battles across all classes remain wide open. Competitors will return to the Petronas Sepang International Circuit on 25-26 July for Round 3, where they will tackle the full 5.543-kilometre Grand Prix circuit in what promises to be another action-packed weekend of racing.
