GWM Malaysia has reached a new milestone in its ASEAN growth strategy with the inaugural completely knocked down (CKD) export of the GWM WEY G9 to Thailand. The shipment marks a significant step forward following the successful local assembly of the model in Malaysia, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to regional collaboration, New Energy Vehicle (NEV) expansion, and cross-border industrial development.
The first CKD shipment underscores GWM’s ambition to establish a resilient and integrated manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem across ASEAN. By positioning Malaysia as a key assembly and export hub, the initiative highlights confidence in the country’s manufacturing capabilities, technology transfer potential, and long-term export scalability for high-value vehicles.
The milestone was witnessed by GWM Malaysia Managing Director, Mr. Cui Anqi, and Chief Operating Officer, En. Roslan Abdullah, reflecting the strategic importance of the programme to the company’s regional roadmap.
Commenting on the achievement, En. Roslan Abdullah noted that the export represents more than a single shipment. He emphasised that Malaysia’s role as a strategic assembly centre enables GWM to serve neighbouring markets with advanced New Energy products while strengthening supply chain integration throughout the region. According to him, the move signals a clear acceleration of GWM’s presence across ASEAN.
Mr. Cui Anqi echoed this sentiment, describing the GWM WEY G9 as a fusion of global engineering excellence and local craftsmanship. He highlighted that the export to Thailand demonstrates Malaysia’s growing capability to support GWM’s broader regional ambitions, adding that the shipment marks the beginning of a long-term roadmap that anchors Malaysia firmly within GWM’s New Energy future.
The WEY G9 units destined for Thailand are built on GWM’s dedicated luxury New Energy platform, supported by the brand’s global research and development network and assembled under strict local quality standards. Thai customers can expect a suite of advanced features, including the Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system, intelligent safety technologies, and a refined premium cabin tailored for both family and business use.
Beyond the immediate export, the CKD programme in Malaysia continues to evolve with deeper localisation, improved technical expertise, and ongoing talent development. These efforts are designed not only to enhance Malaysia’s NEV capabilities but also to strengthen GWM’s competitive position as it pursues sustainable growth across the region.
Following this landmark shipment, GWM Malaysia is now gearing up for the official local launch of the GWM WEY G9, scheduled for early 2026. With regional interest building and the local assembly programme gaining momentum, further details on the launch and GWM’s expanding New Energy Vehicle strategy in Malaysia and ASEAN are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
