The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia returns to mainland China this weekend with a thrilling stop at the iconic Zhuhai International Circuit, marking the championship’s second and final race on Chinese soil before it heads across Asia. Following an action-packed season opener in Shanghai, the championship battle is already heating up across multiple classes.
Leading the charge into Zhuhai is Ling Kang of Origine Motorsport, who sits atop the overall standings after an impressive performance in Shanghai. Close behind is Porsche Junior Marcus Amand of BWT Shanghai Yonda, trailing by just a single point, setting the stage for an intense rivalry. In the Pro-Am category, Wang Zhongwei continues Origine Motorsport’s strong showing by holding the lead, while Cao Qikuan of 610 Racing dominates the Am class after a stellar start. Meanwhile, the Masters category sees Jacky Wu narrowly ahead of John Shen, with just half a point separating the two.
Adding to the excitement is Malaysian driver Naquib Azlan, who will once again represent Team Porsche Malaysia behind the wheel of the #17 car. His presence underscores the growing regional diversity and talent within the championship as it continues its full-season campaign.
The weekend also features a mix of familiar faces and fresh talent. Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup racer Alexander Tauscher steps in for Absolute Racing, replacing Marvin Klein due to scheduling conflicts. Elsewhere, Lu Zhiwei joins OpenRoad Racing, while Jiang Jiawei makes his debut with Origine Motorsport, further expanding the already competitive grid.
Off the track, the event promises to be just as vibrant. Zhuhai will host a large-scale Porsche community gathering, with over 1,000 enthusiasts expected to attend. Fans can look forward to an open paddock experience, a parade of classic Porsche models, and interactive sessions at the Porsche Driving Center, offering a rare opportunity to experience the circuit firsthand.
The Zhuhai International Circuit itself plays a key role in the weekend’s appeal. Opened in 1996 as China’s first permanent racetrack, the 4.319-kilometre, 14-turn layout is known for its blend of high-speed sections and technical braking zones, making it a favorite among drivers. After a five-year absence, its return to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia calendar adds a layer of nostalgia and renewed excitement, especially for veterans who previously competed here.
Several teams and drivers will treat Zhuhai as a home race, including Absolute Racing, Modena Motorsports, and Team Jebsen, alongside drivers such as John Shen, Dominic Tjia, and the Kwong brothers. Their familiarity with the circuit could prove crucial in what is expected to be a tightly contested weekend.
Track action begins with Free Practice on Friday morning, followed by qualifying on Saturday. Race 1 is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, while Race 2 will take place on Sunday, with both races streamed live via Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific’s YouTube channel.
With unpredictable weather, a highly competitive field, and championship points on the line, all signs point to an exhilarating weekend at Zhuhai. As the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia continues its journey across the region, this round could prove pivotal in shaping the title race.
