Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (PRO-NET) has officially launched the all-new Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV, further strengthening the brand’s electrification strategy with advanced plug-in hybrid technology. The latest addition to the Proton e.MAS line-up is designed to deliver electric-first driving in a practical and accessible way, tailored specifically for Malaysian driving conditions.

Unlike conventional hybrids and earlier-generation PHEVs, the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is engineered with an electric-first philosophy. Its petrol engine functions primarily as a supporting energy source, engaging directly with the wheels only when it is more efficient to do so, such as during sustained highway cruising or long uphill climbs. Built on the advanced GMA platform, the vehicle benefits from streamlined component integration and reduced material complexity, resulting in improved efficiency, refinement and everyday usability.

According to PRO-NET Chief Executive Officer Mr. Zhang Qiang, the all-new Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV brings electric mobility closer to mainstream adoption. He noted that the model is designed to make daily electric driving simple and approachable, while hybrid support ensures confidence and flexibility for longer journeys, supporting PRO-NET’s vision of accessible and sustainable mobility.

At the heart of the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is the EM-i Drive System, which prioritises electric power for everyday driving while seamlessly switching to hybrid support when required. Power delivery is managed by an advanced 11-in-1 Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which replaces traditional gear changes with intelligent energy management. This results in smooth, quiet acceleration and EV-like responsiveness across a wide range of driving conditions.

Supporting the electric drive is a hybrid-dedicated petrol engine focused on efficiency rather than constant performance output. Operating quietly in the background, it primarily assists during higher-speed driving or extended journeys to maintain low fuel consumption.

The Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is equipped with a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, offering high levels of safety, durability and heat resistance suitable for Malaysia’s climate. The vehicle’s energy management system automatically selects the most efficient power source, ensuring low fuel consumption even when the battery is not fully charged. Charging remains optional for daily use, adding to the model’s convenience.

To suit different driving scenarios, the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV offers three drive modes with seamless transitions that require no driver intervention. Pure mode enables full electric driving, ideal for urban commutes. Hybrid mode automatically blends electric and petrol power during highway cruising or long gradients, while Power mode delivers enhanced acceleration and throttle response for overtaking or more dynamic driving situations.

Ahead of its launch, the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV successfully completed a 1,104.5 km journey from Penang and Johor Bahru to the Proton Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya without refuelling or recharging. Broadcast live over 25 hours, the journey concluded with a remaining range of 189 km, demonstrating a total achievable range of more than 1,200 km.

Long-term ownership costs are also a key highlight. Over a 10-year period, estimated fuel and maintenance costs are approximately RM29,200, significantly lower than the RM49,800 typically associated with a conventional internal combustion engine SUV. Reduced engine usage, regenerative braking and EV-style service intervals of once a year or every 15,000 km help keep total maintenance costs below RM8,000 over the same period.

The Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV features a modern exterior that clearly differentiates it from the e.MAS 7 EV. A full-width LED illuminated front bar and matching 3D full-length LED tail lights create a distinctive lighting signature, while redesigned rear elements reinforce its unique PHEV identity. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and an aerodynamic profile contribute to both visual presence and driving efficiency.

Inside, the cabin adopts a clean, minimalist design focused on comfort and intuitive usability. Black and White interior themes are enhanced by 256-colour ambient lighting, a unique two-spoke steering wheel and ergonomic leatherette seats. Features such as a multifunction rotary dial, column-mounted gear selector, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, large rear windshield and a 16-speaker premium audio system further elevate the in-cabin experience.

The Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is offered in three variants to cater to different customer needs. The PRIME variant focuses on strong efficiency and essential features at an accessible price point. The PREMIUM adds enhanced comfort and more advanced driver assistance systems, while the range-topping PREMIUM PLUS offers a larger LFP battery, faster DC charging and a panoramic sunroof for extended range and a more refined experience.
