GWM Malaysia has reported an impressive start for its latest premium offering, the WEY G9 Hi4 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), which has secured more than 800 bookings within just one week of its launch. The early achievement underscores rising consumer interest in intelligent hybrid mobility and highlights strong demand for Malaysia’s first locally assembled luxury New Energy MPV.
Officially introduced on 29 January 2026 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur, the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV was launched in a ceremony officiated by Yang Berhormat Tuan Sim Tze Tzin, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The debut not only marked the arrival of a new luxury hybrid model but also reinforced Malaysia’s growing role in the regional New Energy vehicle landscape.
In his keynote address, YB Tuan Sim Tze Tzin described the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV as a meaningful step forward for Malaysia’s automotive industry. He noted that the vehicle aligns with national ambitions to make high-quality mobility more accessible while supporting inclusive economic growth. Emphasising comfort, safety, and advanced mobility solutions for Malaysian families, he highlighted how GWM’s direction complements broader industrial and technological development goals.
A key focus of the speech was the strategic importance of local assembly (CKD). Malaysia’s well-established ecosystem of more than 72 specialised automotive vendors, combined with a highly skilled workforce, provides a strong foundation for manufacturers like GWM. According to the Deputy Minister, CKD operations enable companies to leverage Malaysia’s Free Trade Agreements, opening pathways for duty-free exports across the region.
He further explained that initiatives such as the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV support the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) by enhancing economic complexity, deepening domestic vendor participation, and encouraging meaningful technology transfer. YB Tuan Sim also encouraged GWM to consider expanding its long-term industrial presence in Malaysia, positioning the nation as a sustainable export hub for right-hand-drive markets within ASEAN and beyond.
GWM Malaysia’s leadership expressed optimism about the vehicle’s reception. Mr. Cui Anqi, Managing Director of GWM Malaysia, stated that the strong booking numbers reflect more than initial curiosity. Instead, they signal that Malaysian consumers recognise the WEY G9’s blend of intelligent technology and premium comfort. He added that the response indicates a growing readiness among Malaysians to embrace New Energy mobility solutions.
Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia, emphasised that the milestone also validates Malaysia’s local assembly capabilities. By harnessing domestic expertise and vendor networks, GWM aims to deliver products that meet global standards while contributing long-term value to the national automotive industry.
Developed around the brand philosophy of “First Class for All,” the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV integrates hybrid performance, efficiency, safety, and refined comfort. At its core is GWM’s Hi4 intelligent hybrid system, which enables up to 170 kilometres of pure electric driving and a combined range exceeding 1,000 kilometres. This balance allows for quiet, emission-free urban commutes alongside confident long-distance travel.
Priced at RM269,800, the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV enters Malaysia’s luxury MPV segment with a competitive proposition. Its early success not only reflects robust market acceptance but also reinforces GWM Malaysia’s commitment to positioning the country as a central pillar in its broader ASEAN New Energy strategy.
