UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) has taken a major step forward in Malaysia’s transition toward cleaner mobility with the introduction of the Toyota Vios HEV and Vios HEV GR Sport, alongside the localisation of hybrid battery assembly at its Bukit Raja manufacturing plant.

This dual milestone underscores Toyota’s long-term vision of making electrified mobility practical, affordable, and scalable for Malaysians by pairing trusted hybrid technology with a model that has long been a staple on local roads.

Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor, highlighted the significance of the launch, noting that the Vios Hybrid plays a key role in broadening access to electrified driving. As Toyota’s most attainable hybrid model in Malaysia, it brings advanced technology into a familiar and widely trusted sedan. At the same time, the localisation of hybrid battery assembly strengthens Toyota’s “Mobility for All” philosophy by supporting national sustainability goals, developing local expertise, and reinforcing Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem.

Built upon the reputation of Malaysia’s best-selling B-segment sedan, the Vios HEV integrates Toyota’s proven Hybrid Electric System into a car already synonymous with reliability and everyday usability. By introducing hybrid technology into such a familiar package, Toyota lowers the entry barrier to electrified driving—without requiring changes in driving habits, charging access, or lifestyle.

This approach reflects Toyota’s Multipathway strategy, which recognises that different markets require balanced solutions that combine efficiency, practicality, and real-world relevance as Malaysia progresses toward lower-emission transportation.

Supporting the Vios HEV is UMWT’s investment in a dedicated hybrid battery assembly line at its Bukit Raja facility. Designed to produce up to 30,000 battery units annually, the operation sources 97% of battery components locally, reducing logistics-related CO₂ emissions while improving supply resilience and responsiveness to market demand.

The high-precision facility incorporates intelligent foolproof systems, automated inspections, sound-check functions, comprehensive battery performance testing, and full production traceability. These measures ensure every unit meets Toyota’s global standards for Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR).

Beyond manufacturing, the initiative generates high-value employment opportunities, equips Malaysian talent with advanced electrification skills, and enhances the country’s role within the regional automotive value chain.

At the heart of the Vios HEV is Toyota’s Hybrid Electric System, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor generator and a compact lithium-ion battery engineered to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

The electric motor produces 80 PS and 141 Nm of torque, delivering smooth, instant response from standstill. Together, the system generates a combined output of 111 PS and achieves an impressive NEDC combined fuel consumption of 3.6L/100km.

Its self-charging capability allows low-speed electric driving in urban traffic, while regenerative braking automatically replenishes the battery. The result is quieter operation, enhanced fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions—particularly in city conditions.

Inside the cabin, the Vios HEV blends premium touches with everyday practicality. A 10.1-inch Display Audio system and a 7-inch hybrid-specific Multi-Information Display provide real-time insights into energy flow, battery status, and EV mode operation.

Hybrid-exclusive trim details, ambient lighting, and efficient packaging ensure passenger comfort and boot space are uncompromised. Exterior colour options include Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black Mica, Silver Metallic, Celestite Grey Metallic, and Scarlet, while the Vios HEV GR Sport stands out with distinctive two-tone finishes and a black roof.

For drivers seeking added visual flair and dynamic engagement, the Vios HEV GR Sport delivers hybrid efficiency with Gazoo Racing-inspired enhancements. GR-specific aerodynamics, black exterior accents, and exclusive badging are complemented by GR-tuned suspension and electric power steering, offering sharper handling and improved high-speed stability without sacrificing comfort.

Inside, the GR Sport features Leather Suede seats, contrast stitching, GR-branded floor mats, a GR steering wheel, and refined soft-touch materials that elevate both sportiness and cabin quality.

Safety remains a core focus, with the Vios HEV equipped with Toyota Safety Sense as standard. This includes Pre-Collision System, Lane Keep Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, and Auto High Beam. A 3D Panoramic View Monitor further enhances confidence during parking and low-speed manoeuvres.

The model has also achieved a maximum 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating, reaffirming Toyota’s commitment to occupant and road-user safety.

Both Vios HEV variants come with a 5-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, complemented by an 8-year unlimited mileage hybrid warranty covering the battery, inverter, and power management control unit. Customers can also opt for extended hybrid warranty coverage for added peace of mind.

With the launch of the Vios HEV and the localisation of hybrid battery assembly, Toyota continues to play a leading role in Malaysia’s hybrid journey. By combining accessible pricing, proven technology, and local manufacturing investment, Toyota is delivering practical electrified mobility while contributing to workforce development and long-term sustainability.

The Toyota Vios HEV is priced from RM103,900, while the Vios HEV GR Sport starts from RM109,900 for Peninsular Malaysia, making it Toyota’s most affordable hybrid offering to date.
