Proton has announced a new nationwide incentive programme aligned with the Malaysian government’s Matching Grant Programme for the Replacement of Old Vehicles, aimed at encouraging motorists to retire ageing cars and transition to safer, more efficient vehicles.

Under this initiative, customers trading in vehicles that are 20 years old or older for scrappage will be eligible for trade-in incentives across Proton’s entire model range. These incentives will be further enhanced by a government matching grant of up to RM2,000, reducing the overall cost of purchasing a new Proton vehicle.

The incentive value varies by model. Buyers of the Proton Saga and Proton e.MAS 5 can receive trade-in incentives of up to RM1,000, while customers opting for other models—including the newly launched Proton X50, Proton X70 and Proton e.MAS 7—will qualify for incentives worth RM2,000. When combined with the government matching grant, total benefits can reach RM2,000 for Saga and e.MAS 5 buyers, and up to RM4,000 for customers purchasing other eligible models.

This programme supports the government’s broader objective of reducing the number of older vehicles on Malaysian roads, replacing them with newer models that offer improved safety standards, lower emissions and better fuel efficiency. At the same time, the initiative complements Proton’s business strategy for 2026, as the national carmaker targets annual sales of 200,000 units following a strong performance last year, where its growth significantly outpaced total industry volume (TIV) expansion.

Commenting on the initiative, Proton Chief Executive Officer Dr Li Chunrong said the company is committed to delivering greater value to customers while supporting national mobility goals. He noted that the incentives reinforce responsible vehicle replacement, enhance road safety and accelerate the shift towards cleaner transportation.

The newly announced incentives also build on the success of the Proton Xchange Programme introduced in May 2025. Through that programme, customers who scrapped older vehicles received trade-in support of up to RM2,000 when purchasing a new Proton. By the end of 2025, the programme recorded 4,344 transactions, with approximately RM8.68 million channelled towards helping Malaysians upgrade to newer vehicles.

With the introduction of the matching grant and expanded incentives, Proton aims to further strengthen its role in modernising the national vehicle fleet while making new-car ownership more accessible to Malaysian consumers.
