UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to Malaysia’s clean-mobility journey at the Clean Energy Transition Asia Summit (CETA) 2025, held in Kuala Lumpur from 10 to 12 December. Participating as a Foundation Partner of the summit through MobilityX, UMWT joined policymakers, industry leaders and regional stakeholders to shape a more sustainable and inclusive mobility future for Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.
At the summit, UMWT underscored that a successful mobility transition requires balanced progress across policy alignment, infrastructure development, industry readiness and community engagement. Central to this vision is Toyota’s Multipathway approach, which aligns closely with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB). Guided by Toyota’s Global Environmental Challenge 2050, the strategy recognises that diverse markets demand diverse solutions, and that no single technology can meet all mobility needs.
Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor, highlighted Toyota’s responsibility as one of Malaysia’s longest-standing automotive partners. He emphasised that the company’s focus is on delivering solutions that are practical, scalable and immediately beneficial to Malaysians, while also preparing the nation for long-term sustainability. This includes developing talent, strengthening infrastructure readiness and fostering an ecosystem that allows consumers to adopt cleaner mobility with confidence.
UMWT advocated for a technology-neutral policy framework that reflects Malaysia’s varied mobility requirements. Under Toyota’s “Mobility for All” philosophy, internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) each play a role in supporting different users and industries. Energy-efficient ICEs and HEVs provide near-term carbon dioxide reductions, while BEVs are supported by ongoing NETR investments in charging infrastructure, renewable energy integration and grid upgrades. The launch of Toyota Beyond Zero Malaysia in 2024 further reinforced this multi-technology commitment.
Hydrogen mobility was another key focus at the summit. UMWT has taken early steps in this space through pilot initiatives, including the deployment of Toyota Mirai vehicles to the Sarawak Government fleet in collaboration with Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). The company also introduced Malaysia’s first Mobile Hydrogen Refuelling Station (MHRS) pilot in Putrajaya under the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR). To date, nine Toyota hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are operating nationwide as part of these initiatives.
CETA 2025 also marked the official launch of the R.A.C.E to ZERO 2026 initiative by Deputy Prime Minister YAB Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA). The nationwide programme aims to accelerate Malaysia’s progress towards net-zero emissions by advancing clean energy projects and strengthening national capabilities. UMWT’s participation highlighted how its Multipathway and hydrogen initiatives align with these national objectives.
Beyond policy and technology discussions, UMWT shared insights into its broader regional engagement. The company has been providing selected ministries and agencies with early access to electrified vehicles to better understand real-world driving conditions in Malaysia. As part of MobilityX, UMWT Executive Director Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain delivered a keynote address on ASEAN’s mobility transition and later joined Toyota Motor Asia Executive Vice President and CISO Pras Ganesh in a fireside discussion on regional technology pathways and opportunities for Malaysia.
Toyota’s commitment to Malaysia extends well beyond product offerings. Over decades, the company has invested heavily in local manufacturing, skills development and technology transfer, helping to build a workforce capable of supporting advanced mobility solutions. Collaboration remains a cornerstone of its strategy, from hydrogen demonstrations in Sarawak to refuelling pilots in Putrajaya.
Through its participation at CETA 2025, UMWT strengthened partnerships with government, industry and academia, reaffirming its dedication to delivering solutions, services and talent development initiatives that support Malaysia’s clean-mobility ambitions and long-term competitiveness.
