GWM Malaysia has reached a major milestone with the rollout of the first locally assembled GWM WEY G9 at the EP Manufacturing Bhd (EPMB) plant in Melaka. The ceremony, attended by Melaka Chief Minister Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh alongside senior leaders from EPMB and GWM Malaysia, signals a significant step forward in Malaysia’s growing role within the regional New Energy Vehicle (NEV) landscape.
The WEY G9 becomes the first premium Chinese NEV MPV to be assembled in Malaysia—a strategic move that reinforces GWM’s commitment to localisation, industrial development, and the strengthening of Malaysia as a central hub for ASEAN operations. The model is slated for its official Malaysian debut in early 2026.
The start of CKD operations at the EPMB facility highlights GWM’s confidence in Malaysia’s capabilities in high-value automotive manufacturing. The collaboration is poised to expand technology transfer, grow local talent, develop domestic vendors and lay the groundwork for future export activities to neighbouring markets.
GWM Malaysia Chief Operating Officer En. Roslan Abdullah described the rollout as a landmark achievement, emphasising the fusion of global engineering expertise with Malaysian manufacturing excellence.
“This milestone strengthens our long-term commitment to Malaysia—from creating high-value jobs to elevating local suppliers. It ensures our customers enjoy premium New Energy vehicles proudly assembled in Melaka,” he said.
Managing Director Mr. Cui Anqi added that the milestone marks more than just local assembly. It represents the beginning of GWM’s broader regional expansion strategy.
“Seeing the first WEY G9 come off the Malaysian assembly line reflects our ambition to enhance our New Energy presence in ASEAN. Malaysia will play an integral role as our strategic manufacturing base,” he shared, noting that the partnership with EPMB will also support future export plans.
Developed through GWM’s international R&D network and built on a luxury New Energy platform, the WEY G9 benefits from global standards paired with Malaysian quality control. The model will introduce GWM’s advanced Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system to the premium MPV segment, offering first-class comfort, intelligent safety features, refined performance and a premium cabin designed for both family and business users.
GWM Malaysia has officially opened nationwide bookings for the WEY G9, with an expected pricing below RM300,000. Interested customers may place their bookings at any authorised GWM dealership.
With the first locally assembled unit complete, GWM is now preparing for the model’s official launch in early 2026. The CKD programme will continue advancing with deeper localisation, workforce development and enhanced technical capabilities at the Melaka plant. These initiatives form part of GWM’s long-term ASEAN roadmap, positioning Malaysia as a key contributor to the region’s New Energy Vehicle ecosystem.
Further updates on the CKD programme and GWM’s regional expansion plans will be announced as development progresses.
