Proton recently put the spotlight on the fuel efficiency and performance of its latest sedan through the “Penang Proton One Tank Challenge”, held on 11 October as part of the Hari Sukan Negara celebrations for Daerah Seberang Perai Tengah. The event combined the thrill of driving with the spirit of healthy living, in line with the theme — “Drive Efficiently. Live Actively. Celebrate Malaysia.”
As one of the event’s strategic partners, Proton invited 33 S70 owners to take part in a real-world test that measured how far they could go on a single tank of fuel. The challenge also coincided with Proton’s recent announcement as a title sponsor of the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2025, where participants stand a chance to win a brand-new Proton S70 through a lucky draw.
Flagged off by YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, participants embarked on a 110km route that took them across both Penang bridges, winding through Bayan Lepas, George Town, and back to Setia Sentral Juru.
To ensure fairness, every S70 had its tank filled to the brim and sealed before departure. Competitors then had to balance fuel-saving strategies with maintaining a minimum average speed to complete the journey within the allocated time. Fuel consumption was measured at the end of the drive, with prizes going to those who achieved the best efficiency.
At the finish line, Abu Bakar Bin Mohd Yusoff emerged victorious, achieving an incredible 3.48L/100km, equivalent to 31.61km per litre. His result translates to a theoretical range of 1,580km from a single 50-litre tank — an impressive testament to the Proton S70’s engineering. Abu Bakar received RM1,000 in cash for his achievement.
Second place went to Muhammad Syamim Bin Omar Farook with a result of 3.98L/100km, earning RM800, while third place was claimed by Mohd Aliff Bin Sani, who achieved 4.40L/100km and took home RM600.
Additional awards were also presented for Best Social Media Engagement, celebrating creative posts featuring the Proton S70, and a colouring contest for participants’ family members, ensuring the event had something for everyone.
Priced from RM73,800, the Proton S70 combines affordability, performance, and advanced engineering. Powered by a 1.5L turbocharged engine producing 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque, and paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, it offers both spirited driving and excellent fuel economy — key reasons why it leads Malaysia’s C-segment sedan market.
Speaking on the event’s success, Zhang Qiang, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar, said: “The Proton S70 has been engineered to meet the needs of drivers who want a balance of performance, comfort, and design — with outstanding fuel efficiency. The Penang One Tank Challenge highlights these strengths and reinforces why the S70 remains the top choice in its class.”
