Proton has achieved a major milestone in August 2025, recording its highest monthly sales volume in 36 months with 15,228 units sold across domestic and export markets. This performance pushed the company’s year-to-date (YTD) sales beyond the six-figure mark, reaching 100,902 units, solidifying its second-place position in Malaysia’s automotive sales rankings.
The strong showing coincided with a surge in total industry volume (TIV), which reached 73,890 units in August—the highest monthly level seen this year. Proton’s market share climbed to an estimated 20.6%, matching its April peak and representing a 1.3% increase from July. For the year to date, the brand now holds an estimated 19.5% share of the national market.
A key contributor to Proton’s success was the newly updated Proton X50. After an early boost of 999 units delivered in the last week of July, the B-segment SUV enjoyed a full month of deliveries in August, surging 107.3% to 4,287 units. This not only crowned the X50 as the top SUV in Malaysia but also positioned it as the segment leader. In just 38 days since launch, over 5,000 units of the model are already on the roads.
Production readiness and a strong prelaunch strategy—ranging from nationwide roadshows to early booking incentives—ensured that demand was met swiftly. Proton Deputy CEO Zhang Qiang credited the achievement to careful planning and revealed that the company will extend its “Gempak! Deal” promotion until the end of October to reward customers.
Despite the spotlight on SUVs, Proton’s traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) models remained strong performers.
- The Proton Saga, fresh from its 40th anniversary celebrations, maintained its role as the brand’s overall best-seller, with 6,331 units sold in August and a YTD total of 44,676 units.
- The Proton S70 held its lead in the C-segment sedan market, adding 1,210 units in August to reach 11,960 units YTD.
- The Proton X90 also continued to dominate the D-segment SUV category with 220 units sold in August.
- Meanwhile, the Proton X70, Persona, and Iriz added 627, 1,379, and 305 units respectively, with the X70 showing a 39.4% increase compared to its 2024 performance.
On the electrification front, the Proton e.MAS 7 strengthened its position as Malaysia’s best-selling EV. August sales climbed 20.7% over July, with 852 units sold, raising the YTD total to 5,811 units. With the imminent launch of the affordable Proton e.MAS 5 and production ramping up at Proton’s new EV plant in Tanjong Malim, expectations are high for further growth in the segment.
Exports also saw record performance, with August marking the brand’s best month so far this year at 586 units shipped abroad. This pushed YTD export sales to 3,144 units, a 49% increase over 2024. Key drivers included the X50, Saga, and e.MAS 7, which is set to debut in Singapore on 17 September.
