Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (PRO-NET) has announced that the Proton e.MAS 7 remains Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle for August 2025. The SUV continues its winning streak as the nation’s No. 1 EV for the eighth consecutive month.
Between January and August 2025, deliveries of the e.MAS 7 totaled 5,811 units, with 5,455 sold locally and 356 exported to four international markets. Based on the latest JPJ registration data, the model commands a strong 24% market share, meaning nearly one in every four EVs on Malaysian roads is now a Proton e.MAS 7.
“We are sincerely grateful to all Proton e.MAS 7 owners for their trust and support,” said Mr. Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of PRO-NET. “This vehicle was designed with Malaysians in mind, and customer feedback has been central to every improvement we’ve made. The recent launch of new e.MAS 7 variants, featuring over-the-air updates, fresh colours, and enhanced interior choices, reflects our commitment to continuous innovation.”
August also marked another key achievement for Proton with the official opening of its first dedicated EV plant in Tanjung Malim. Initially launched as a completely built-up (CBU) import from China, the e.MAS 7 will soon transition to local assembly (CKD), making it the company’s first domestically produced EV.
The facility, located within the Automotive High Technology Valley (AHTV), has an initial annual capacity of 20,000 units, expandable to 45,000 as demand grows. This move not only reduces dependency on imports but also strengthens Malaysia’s EV ecosystem by creating skilled jobs, increasing vendor participation, and improving affordability for consumers.
The government has been vocal in its support of Proton’s EV journey, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urging the rollout of a competitively priced national EV ahead of the ASEAN Summit in October 2025. The local production of the e.MAS 7 positions Tanjung Malim as a cornerstone of Malaysia’s electric mobility ambitions, reinforcing the country’s role as a regional hub for EV development and manufacturing.
With strong sales momentum, expanded variants, and the beginning of local assembly, the Proton e.MAS 7 is not only shaping Malaysia’s EV market but also accelerating the nation’s path toward a sustainable automotive future.
