Bermaz Motor has officially introduced the Mazda CX-60, the first model from Mazda’s Large Product Group, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the brand in Malaysia. Positioned as Mazda’s flagship SUV, the CX-60 promises an elevated blend of driving pleasure, refined aesthetics, and cutting-edge safety—all wrapped in a package that is unmistakably “Crafted in Japan.”

The CX-60 embodies Mazda’s evolved Kodo design philosophy, expressed through the theme of “Noble Toughness.” From its commanding stance to its fluid yet muscular body lines, the SUV strikes a balance between power and elegance. The concept of “Ma”—the Japanese appreciation for empty space—has also been woven into its design, creating a sense of calm beauty alongside robust form. The front fascia is highlighted by a bold new grille design with integrated indicators and Mazda’s first-ever vertically stacked headlamps, accompanied by distinctive L-shaped lighting signatures at both ends. At the rear, a streamlined cabin placement and calligraphy-inspired surface treatment add to its sense of motion, even when stationary.

Step inside, and the CX-60 continues to impress with its driver-focused cockpit and Japanese-inspired craftsmanship. Natural textures and premium materials are paired with advanced technology, creating a space that is both elegant and functional. The wide dashboard seamlessly integrates a 12.3-inch multi-information display, an equally large infotainment screen with voice recognition, and a crisp Active Driving Display. Mazda’s new Driver Personalization System adds an extra layer of convenience by automatically adjusting more than 250 settings—covering the seat, steering wheel, mirrors, and displays—based on the driver’s stored profile. Occupants are treated to modern conveniences such as wireless smartphone charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360˚ See-Through View Monitor, and an immersive 12-speaker BOSE premium sound system.

At the heart of the CX-60 lies a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Delivering 189 hp and 261 Nm of torque, the powertrain is built on Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which is engineered to support future electrification. Mazda’s Jinba-Ittai philosophy—representing “oneness between car and driver”—is at the core of the CX-60’s driving experience. This is further enhanced by Kinematic Posture Control, which manages suspension behavior to optimize stability, cornering, and ride comfort across different terrains.

The CX-60 is backed by a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, reinforcing Mazda’s dedication to both active and passive safety. Its comprehensive i-Activsense suite includes features such as Adaptive LED Headlamps, Blind Spot Monitoring, Smart Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and Cruising & Traffic Support. Together, these systems provide an extra layer of reassurance for drivers and passengers alike.

Before the launch, Bermaz brought us to Ipoh with a fleet of CX-60s for a short test drive. Here are some of my first impressions:At first glance, the CX-60 looks like a typical Mazda. However, its design language feels more modern while still retaining Mazda’s familiar DNA. The same applies to the interior—premium and elegant remain the two words that best describe the cabin every time you step inside.

On the road, the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine may not be as powerful as a turbocharged unit, but it’s more than adequate for this large SUV. It builds speed with relative ease—you just need to rev it a little. Fortunately, the engine loves to rev, so reaching its 6,500 rpm redline feels effortless. The real highlight, however, is the new 8-speed automatic transmission. Gear changes are buttery smooth, to the point where you can barely feel them. Mazda claims the transmission also reacts faster than before, though the difference is subtle in real-world driving. More importantly, the pairing makes the engine noticeably more efficient—a point we’ll revisit in a full review.

Thanks to its new platform, the CX-60 handles more sharply than expected. In fact, I found the steering perhaps a little too sharp for a family SUV. But for those who enjoy tackling twisty roads, this responsiveness will bring plenty of joy. The rear-wheel-drive setup makes the CX-60 feel almost like a supersized MX-5—agile and engaging. Ride quality leans slightly toward sportiness, with the suspension communicating just enough road feedback to keep drivers connected. Even so, passengers in the rear seats will have no trouble settling into comfort. The brakes, in typical Mazda fashion, engage with a deeper biting point, which may initially feel less direct. But press harder and they deliver reassuring stopping power.

Available in striking shades including Soul Red Crystal, Rhodium White, Jet Black, Platinum Quartz, and Zircon Sand, the fully imported Mazda CX-60 is priced from RM198,900. Built at Mazda’s Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi, Japan, it comes with a 5-Year Manufacturer’s Warranty and a 5-Year Free Maintenance Programme—covering labour, parts, and lubricants for up to 100,000 km.
