In a celebration of creativity, connection, and the vibrant spirit of Malaysia, the first-ever Volkswagen Shutter Stories photography competition concluded with dazzling success. Organised by Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) and powered by Fujifilm Malaysia, the contest offered local photographers a unique opportunity to express their passion through the lens—capturing not just Volkswagen vehicles, but also the dynamic stories they inspire.
At the heart of the competition was Hasanul Asyraf bin Hanafi, 35, who emerged as the Grand Prize winner. Hasanul impressed the judges with his visually striking entries that captured the emotional resonance between people, cars, and the open road. His prize included a Fujifilm camera and lens set worth RM7,000, a mentorship programme with acclaimed photographer Aaron Lee, and a one-year photography contract with VPCM—offering him not just recognition, but also a chance to deepen his craft in the professional automotive arena.
In second place, Kelvin Ooi, 23, received a Fujifilm instax Mini 99 camera and film pack valued at RM1,200. Neeventhaa Perabagaran, a 19-year-old Multimedia University student, took third place with her powerful visual narrative. She walked away with a Fujifilm instax Pal (worth RM588) and exclusive Volkswagen merchandise.
“This competition goes beyond photography,” said Charles Lim, Brand Manager at VPCM. “Volkswagen is about more than just mobility. It’s about personality, connection, and celebrating the joy of the journey. Through Shutter Stories, we got to see Malaysia’s roads, colours, and people from unique and heartfelt perspectives—and every frame spoke volumes.”
The partnership with Fujifilm Malaysia also underpinned the competition’s artistic depth. Thomas Kwan, Senior Sales and Marketing Manager of Fujifilm Malaysia’s Electronic Imaging & Instax Division, highlighted the synergy: “This collaboration with Volkswagen reflects a mutual drive for creativity and innovation. Through their lenses, participants told compelling stories that beautifully captured the spirit of Volkswagen.”
Open to Malaysians and residents aged 18 and above, the competition invited entries across five meaningful themes: VW Love, VW Adventure, VW People, VW Motion, and VW Life & Colours. Each participant submitted one photo per theme, with at least two of them featuring a Volkswagen model.
Over 30 photographers took part in this maiden edition, showcasing a colourful tapestry of stories that blended automotive enthusiasm with Malaysia’s rich visual identity—from winding roads and spontaneous joyrides to snapshots of everyday beauty and bold individuality.
With its debut marked by passion, talent, and storytelling excellence, Volkswagen Shutter Stories has set the stage for future editions that promise even greater engagement and inspiration from Malaysia’s vibrant creative community.
