Proton continues to gather pace in 2025, recording its second-best monthly performance of the year in May with total sales of 13,328 units across domestic, export, and smart vehicle categories, including the growing e.MAS electric lineup. This figure marks a 6.1% increase over May 2024, extending the national automaker’s upward trajectory for a third consecutive month.
Cumulatively, Proton’s sales from March to May 2025 have grown 10% year-on-year, pushing year-to-date (YTD) sales to 61,087 units. Market share is projected at 19.2% for both May and the YTD period, based on an estimated Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 69,495 units.
Key contributors to this growth include the strong performance of the Proton X50 and Proton X70, both of which benefited from refreshed variants introduced last year. The X70 stood out with a remarkable 44% growth in May alone, reaching 982 units, and pushing its YTD sales up by 53.1% over the same period in 2024. The X50 also maintained its lead in the B-segment SUV category with 2,198 units sold, a 14.3% increase year-on-year, bringing its YTD total to 9,704 units.
In the premium SUV space, the Proton X90 recorded a healthy 15.5% growth to 224 units in May, solidifying its position atop the D-segment SUV market.
Proton’s sedan lineup showed similar positive momentum. The popular A-segment Proton Saga led the pack with 5,513 units sold—a 5.8% improvement over April. The Persona followed suit with a 4.3% increase to 1,385 units, while the S70 added a 2.7% bump to 1,763 units. The Proton Iriz also gained ground, improving sales by 14.1% to 331 units and securing its place as the fourth best-selling B-segment hatchback in the country.
The electric vehicle segment continues to be a shining star for the brand. The Proton e.MAS 7 reached a new sales milestone in May, with 916 units sold—the highest monthly total yet—boosting its YTD tally to 3,632 units. The model has now led EV sales for five straight months, establishing itself as the best-selling EV in Malaysia.
Commenting on the upward trend, Proton CEO Dr. Li Chunrong said, “After a slow start to 2025, sales of Proton vehicles have shown an upward trend over the last three months. This is a direct result of our promotional efforts and the strong attraction car buyers have to our stylish, technology-driven lineup.”
On the global front, Proton is doubling down on its export strategy to counter market saturation at home. The year began with the launch of the CKD Proton Saga in left-hand drive for Egypt, as well as e.MAS 7 promotional campaigns in Nepal and Singapore. In June, the e.MAS 7 will debut in Trinidad & Tobago, Proton’s second EV export market after Nepal.
Export sales have surged by 36.6% year-on-year, led by the Proton Saga (710 units) and the X50, which has seen a staggering 360% increase to 694 units in YTD exports. Dr. Li emphasized the importance of global expansion: “The increased focus on growing export sales is paying off. We believe our structured and long-term approach will help us achieve sustained success overseas.”
With steady gains across every segment and a clear strategy for domestic and international growth, Proton is poised to sustain its momentum into the second half of 2025.
