Proton has marked a significant achievement in April 2025, demonstrating strong sales performance and gaining increased market share despite a highly competitive automotive landscape in Malaysia. The company recorded an impressive 12,692 units in sales, reflecting a 14.7% year-on-year growth from April 2024. This growth has propelled Proton’s market share to 20.8%, a notable achievement amidst an overall rise of just 1.8% in Total Industry Volume (TIV).
This surge in sales has solidified Proton’s position in second place within Malaysia’s automotive sales rankings. Despite intense competition from new entrants and the growing presence of other brands, Proton’s diverse range of models, including significant price reductions, continues to appeal to consumers.
A key highlight of Proton’s recent success is the Proton e.MAS 7, the company’s first fully electric vehicle (EV), which has seen remarkable growth since its December 2024 launch. April’s sales figures show that the e.MAS 7 has broken through the 800-unit threshold, with 863 units sold, contributing to its total of 2,716 units for the year. This makes it the best-selling EV in Malaysia, helping to position Proton’s e.MAS brand in second place overall for EV sales. The e.MAS 7’s performance has elevated Proton’s EV portfolio, with EVs now comprising 6% of the company’s total sales.
The Proton X50 also had a standout month, leading the B-segment SUV category with 2,389 units sold in April, marking its highest monthly sales volume for 2025. With 7,506 units sold year-to-date (YTD), the X50 remains a dominant player in its segment, outperforming previous-year sales by 420 units. Proton’s strong performance extends beyond EVs and SUVs, with the Proton X90 maintaining its lead in the D-segment SUV market, and the Proton S70 continuing to dominate the C-segment sedan category.
Proton’s ICE (internal combustion engine) models also saw solid results. The Proton X70 achieved 682 units in April, further pushing its YTD total to 2,839 units, marking a 44% increase over last year. The Proton Saga, with 5,213 units sold in April, remains a best-seller, while the Proton Persona and Proton Iriz continue to perform strongly in their respective segments.
The company’s strong domestic results are complemented by significant progress in export sales. Proton reached a new high in export sales in April, with 520 units shipped abroad. The Proton X50, Proton Saga, and Proton e.MAS 7 were key contributors to this success, with the e.MAS 7 even making waves in Singapore at The Car Expo in early May. Proton is also expanding its footprint in Bangladesh, where the locally assembled Proton X70 was recently launched, marking a milestone for the brand’s regional expansion.
Looking ahead, Proton is poised to continue its growth trajectory. CEO Roslan Abdullah has expressed confidence in the company’s performance for the remainder of 2025, noting that the first four months have been focused on solidifying sales foundations for a strong second half of the year. With new model launches planned across both ICE and EV segments, Proton is well-positioned to maintain its momentum and meet the increasing demand for both traditional and electric vehicles.
Proton’s growth in both domestic and export markets is a testament to its strategic focus on innovation, market expansion, and consumer demand. As the company strengthens its presence in the EV market and secures leadership positions in several key segments, it is poised for continued success in the competitive automotive industry.
