In a significant stride toward shaping Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) future, the inaugural NxGV Challenge 2025 has brought together 10 institutions of higher learning to contribute to the formulation of the nation’s EV policy. Held at the APD track in MAEPS Serdang, the event serves not only as a competitive platform but also as a collaborative initiative between academia and the automotive industry.
The challenge, which began in December 2024, saw invitations sent to 15 universities, polytechnics, and private colleges. From these, the 10 most promising entries were selected to participate in the competition. Each team was tasked with designing and building a go-kart-style EV, which was then put to the test on the track. Beyond the thrill of engineering and innovation, the goal was clear: generate meaningful research and findings that will guide the government’s EV policy development.
Strategically spearheaded by Perodua, in partnership with the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and the Society of Automotive Engineers Malaysia (SAEM), the NxGV Challenge embodies a collaborative vision for a greener, smarter automotive future.
“Perodua, being the main strategic partner for this event, thanks the institutions of higher learning for participating. Their findings will go a long way in creating a policy that reflects Malaysia’s unique conditions,” said Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, President and CEO of Perodua.
He further emphasized Perodua’s commitment to the Malaysia Industrial Master Plan 2030, highlighting the company’s role in leading the national EV movement. “As a national carmaker, we have a responsibility to involve Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem and academic institutions to ensure the country remains relevant in EV technology,” he added.
The event not only provided a platform for academic-industry collaboration but also demonstrated how education, innovation, and strategic partnerships can together shape national policy. As the results of the challenge feed into government deliberations, the impact of NxGV Challenge 2025 is set to resonate far beyond the racetrack — influencing policy, empowering local talent, and driving Malaysia’s transition into a sustainable automotive future.
