Previously, when I reviewed the A200, it felt like Mercedes-Benz had made many refinements to the vehicle, giving it a more mature feel. I was quite impressed with the update, which gave me a very positive outlook on the more powerful variant. During a recent festive season, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia allocated the facelifted A35 AMG for me to drive. Naturally, I was curious about the extent of the updates the A35 had received. Let’s find out.

Like the A200, the A35 receives a slew of enhancements aimed at making the vehicle feel more refined and matured. For starters, it features redesigned daytime running lights and taillights, similar to those seen on the A200. However, the A35 sets itself apart with advanced matrix LED headlights that give the small sedan a modern and premium appearance at night. Complementing the headlights is the iconic vertical-style Panamericana grille, which brings the A35’s look closer to the more aggressive A45. Additionally, the A35 now features a brand-new ducktail spoiler at the rear, adding to its sporty character. Lastly, the A35 is equipped with new two-tone rims that look significantly sportier than before.

Moving inside, the interior also sees some enhancements—though admittedly, the changes aren’t dramatic. Much like the A200, the A35 now comes with updated infotainment and instrument cluster graphics. The infotainment system now supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with Android Auto finally running in full-screen mode, allowing you to make the most of the available screen real estate. Being an AMG model, the A35 also includes AMG-specific graphics on both the infotainment and instrument cluster displays, enhancing the overall driving experience.

The A35 now sports the new-generation steering wheel, in line with other current Mercedes-Benz models. This “dragonfly” design feels great to hold and adds a touch of modernity. The AMG drive mode toggle remains, allowing for on-the-go adjustments. While the front seats are sporty, they differ from the A45’s. The A35’s seats lean more towards comfort while still offering sufficient support for spirited driving. Overall, the updates to the interior make the A35 feel more current and polished.

Under the hood, Mercedes-Benz has also made noteworthy updates. While the engine retains its 2.0L turbocharged displacement, it now includes 48V mild-hybrid technology. This system is primarily aimed at improving efficiency rather than enhancing performance. As a result, the engine still produces 306 PS and 400 Nm of torque. It is now paired with a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, replacing the previous 7-speed unit.

Despite the focus on efficiency, the A35 continues to deliver strong performance. It can sprint from 0–100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. With 306 hp on tap, it’s more than powerful enough for Malaysian roads—you’ll easily outpace most vehicles, EVs aside. Like the A200, the A35 benefits from improved refinement, especially at lower speeds. The new 8-speed transmission makes it easier to drive in urban settings, as it doesn’t pressure you to drive aggressively. Gear shifts are incredibly smooth, to the point where they’re almost imperceptible during both upshifts and downshifts.

Surprisingly, the A35 is also quite fuel efficient for its performance level. During my time with the car, I averaged 9.0L/100 km. With the facelift, Mercedes-Benz engineers have also reintroduced the pops and bangs from the exhaust, though they only appear in Sport mode. This little touch significantly enhances the fun factor.

In terms of handling, the A35 is a delight. It offers precise turn-in and goes exactly where you point the steering. The all-wheel-drive system provides plenty of grip, making the car feel planted through corners. Switching to Sport mode stiffens the suspension, giving the A35 an even more composed feel during spirited driving. Compared to the previous version, this new A35’s suspension feels more sorted and well-balanced.

With a price tag of RM 343,888, the A35 strikes a fine balance between comfort and performance. In fact, it’s a much easier car to live with than the more hardcore A45. It offers ample performance for daily driving while still being a comfortable cruiser when needed. While it may not be the full-fledged AMG that purists dream of, the A35 delivers about 80% of the driving excitement without compromising comfort. For everyday usability, it’s arguably the better choice compared to the A45, offering a more balanced and livable driving experience.
